Some good news personally anyway

Post by seskis281 »

As rough a day as both the economy and news around here has been, I thought I'd also share a bit of good personal news.

Today was a good day for me on the publishing front, and not just seeing my 1st adventure in Crusader - my first peer-reviewed and published film studies piece is going to press as well, a chapter in this book coming from U. of Kentucky Press next month:

Shameless promotion I know, but I am proud and I don't think this is bad since it's not trying to hawk another RPG press.

Congratulations!! on both. Being published is a great achievement, especially in the peer-reviewed academic world. Great work. Can't wait to read the adventure and the chapter.

being published in the world of academia is no small task of accomplishment. congratulations and celebrations. do you drink champagne or would you prefer something more "meaty?"

What kind of philosophy does the book cover... is this new-age "let's all feel good" philosophy or the heavy hitters, Hegel, Kant etc?

Hmm... not sure what you mean by "new-agey" there, all I can say is that it's a serious academic look by multiple writers examining how differing films of Speilberg ecounter philosphy. Needless to say many of us work with "heavy hitters" from different eras and perspectives - from the Greeks to Hume, to certainly some of the "traditional" 19th-early 20th century dominant writers (my doctoral adviser always referred to the "Triple HHHs of philosophy, Heiddeger, Hegel and Husserl"), to some of the very dominant voices of the later 20th century (Derrida, Levinas in my case).

That said, the focus is not on how the forms and views of different philosophers are seen IN these movies, rather how the films themselves CREATE philosophical engagement through their images. So you won't see every chapter focusing on a single or paired philosopher neccesarily, but rather each focusing on one or several related films that reveal both intended and unintended philosophical inquiry.

I can state that the book isn't a "fanboy" touchy-feely book bowing at the alter of a famed director, if that's what you are afraid of lol.

Congratulations John. I hope to have time to read your Crusader 12 submission tonight, since it arrived yesterday.
