And Again....in the Troll Trenches

Post by Troll Lord »

Hey folks,

I'm not going to call these the Troll Dens anymore but rather the Trenches! Its like the Trench Wars from the early Winter Dark Wars around here. If its not one thing its three others.

My main computer for internet mess has been acting kind of wonky lately. This is the one with all the press release lists, emails, contacts, address books. Its a file sharing portal for all things TLG. When Peter and I move files back and forth it goes through that computer.

As I said, its been acting kind of wonky lately. Jason (Breakdaddy) came over and ran some pretty extensive 'kick the shit' test on it and it seems that my computer was hijacked by some one or the other. It was bad enough that he 'flattened' the hard drive.

There's not too much data on there, most it replicated files I can get sent back or ones he saved.

But ALL emails written between the 4th of November and the 10th are gone. So if you emailed me in those days to ANY TLG account, I do not have it.

Also, all address and contact info was not saved. Its all gone. It sucks on the PR list and now I have to reassemble all this stuff. But nothing to do, but do it I suppose.

I have invested 19.95 in some pretty sweet soft-ware to start keeping my addresses and contact in. Its called "Address Book" and it comes in this handy pulp like material that is spiral bound into some cow hide. It can be safely stored in any desk drawer, is highly portable and 100% safe from any internet hacks, power outage or hard drive burns.

Oh yeah, it did not come with, but I bought some pretty cool thing called, er, let me see....a pencil. Apparently with THIS device I can write in the address book and even erase and re-write information as needed. What technology can't do these days!!!!!

Thanks to all for the patience.

Steve

And my phone just died.

In case your not following the long, agonizing death of Steve technology, I really don't do well with electronic gadgets.

If the Stever were to touch a 4E book... would it than just burst into flames? Just wondering.
Get a phone. Ring-a-ding, ding.

This Dark Ages kick he's on is scary!!!

What Steve does not realize is that he is the re-incarnation of Ned Ludd, and his spirit unconsciously reaches out to technological devices to extinguish their spark and potential...

Some people are just weird around electronics. One of the ladies in my gaming group kills VCRs by her mere presence. Her husband has had to buy 4 different VCRs in the past couple of years, and other electronic devices won't work, or work weird around her. You guys should form a support group.

I am rebuilding the machine and should have it back to Steve tomorrow afternoon if all continues as smoothly as it's been going. It was in pretty bad shape with some serious spyware and the internet settings had been tampered with. It's been formatted and XP has been reinstalled. The drivers are in place already and the Acronis backup of the old data is back on the new installation of windows. Got some software to install to try and make the PC "Steve proof" but it ain't gonna be easy
PS- The emails are indeed toast, some info was too compromised to resurrect and the email settings were among these.

Steve, do you use any sort of Anti-VIrus/Anti-Spyware software? I recommend McAfee or Webroot. You should probably enable automatic updates in Windows also.

I have heard stories about people that react badly to electronics. Apparently it has something to do with magnetic radiation that the person produces, or something like that.

Steve uses all the right anti virus software, all the right spybot stuff, all the right blockers and so forth. His problem is more severe. EBCAK ^_~`

Yeah, a PEBKAC error is always fatal to a PC.

So, you're saying the computer has an "I.D. Ten T" error? Those can be hard to fix.

The problem is somewhere between the screen and the back of the chair, as I always say.

Dude needs a solid database with a kindergarten front end and daily backups, I guess!

Dudes. Steve has his PC back. Commence email and IM barrage...

If he infects this install someone owes him a damn medal. That thing is locked down tight. I have faith that if anyone can f**k up a perfectly good PC, it is Steve!

Did you make him Guest-level user credentials? That'd remove a lot of problems.

It would create more problems than it solves at this point, so I did not go this route though I thought about it. We did do this on a laptop that TLG uses and it's worked quite well.

I have installed sandboxie so he can surf a lot more safely and a solid firewall and antivirus. He has an antispyware program he will be installing as well. BOClean is also running in the background for the time being and Winpatrol is on guard.

He just needs to quit visiting those porn sites. That alone would reduce his risk to infection by at least 90%. Not taking any puns or inuendo into account, just talking pure computer virus infections, not to mention all those other cookie type programs that massively slow down your computer.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

then he should buy a porn dedicated computer, and use the business comps for legitimate TLG business only. la vida stroka living is strictly personal, I hope.

For the record:

This email issue needs to be resolved now as there are numerous people clamoring to get specific products and are receiving less than stellar service, making them 1) not want the product and 2) not want anything TLG ever produces. Just saying... do something about it. You don't want to lose customers.

Serleran,

You've mentioned this to me before, but WHO is it. I've answered all the emails in my orders and troll account (minus only what was sent today or late yesterday).

Send me a link to where they are complaining so I can get ahold of them, or give me their email address so I can email them directly.

I have no idea what livin la vida stroka means! hahaah

But the TLG main computer is used for TLG business and only TLG business. I did however, during the election, use it extensively to surf news sites, and my son has been using it to download games in the past few weeks. I never download programs of any stripe, won't even buy software over the net but rather buy disks.
