So, I watched the 2nd hour of Underworld last night (first time Ive seen it) I enjoyed and now I have to rent the movie to see the first hour.
In C&C, vampires looked to be way tougher than werewolves heck vamps can even summon more wolves (3d6) vs. a werewolf's lesser summons of (1d6) wolves!!
[I do see that werebears are a bit tougher with regeneration 1 (I dont see the description on the page , but I assume its less than a trolls regeneration 2]
Anyway, I got to thinking about some of the early A series modules and how Ive run them and Castle Zagyg: Upper Works which contains all manner of critters.
So far, my group has generally faced single bands of monsters with some occasional collaboration amongst different humanoids. Ive had one major dragon vs. cloud giant encounter (not a fight, but the cloud giant drove the dragon away) that my players enjoyed, but not much else.
In looking at CZ:UW, I see a wide open way for CKs to run the monster groups ~ they could sometimes work together against PCs or fight each other. And a smart PC group could very well utilize some of the humanoid monsters against others bands.
Of course, I assume that chaotic evil low intelligent creatures randomly attack anyone for food, sport or survival (goblins walking through alligator infested swamps/creeks do NOT get a pardon!)
My question to CKs, do you have monsters fight each other in you games/campaigns?

I prefer killing the monsters and taking their stuff, so I generally do not have monsters fighting other monsters. The one instance where I did do it was under the "that's comedy" clause of the rules. I had a pair of basilisks after failing to turn any of the party to stone look at each other.

Rarely. Most of the time the players just kill em and take their stuff. Rarely does talking ad making alliances occur to anyone. Then, when it does, its a small chance they will decide to do it.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

When there is a logical reason for it -- ie, a druid with animal companions, a wizard summoning monster allies, but also when the party is infiltrated by something naughty, or even if they're subdued or join willingly (like the time the party got some derro to team up against the kuo-toa/drow alliance.) I have wanted to do a "monster war" for some time, but haven't really worked out any details for it, and, since I'm not running a game, its not going to happen any time soon.

Count me for one to use multiple methods. I don't use the monster vs. monster much (I think I can count the times on one hand in 22+ years), but I have certainly done the PC adn monster vs. monster before (the "lesser evil" trick)

Totally depends. Mostly, PCs fight monsters and take thier booty.

Usually the PCs fight the monsters, but every once in a while, they will negociate and manipulate the monsters to turn against other monsters, then go after whoever is left.

I just *had* to vote other in this case.
Admittedly, the norm is PC vs Critters and/or NPC but in a fairly recent session, I had a situation which didn't quite fit the other choices and thinking back, there have been other situations when the 'not quite expected' happened.
In the recent session, the party of adventurers where trying to figure out how to get into a fortified outpost (largely manned by goblinoids). They thought they had the advantage since there was a thick fog. Unfortunately, they tripped the alarm which, aside from alerting the outpost, also brought about the attention of a nasty black dragon who was searching for 'something'.
It just so happened that this 'something was carried by one of the party members... it resembled a large 'hoop' that was made of metal and had an aura of magic about it.
At any rate, when the large doors/gates opened to send out a party of troops to deal with the adventurers, the black dragon begun its descent and the group started running for their lives! In a matter of seconds, it didn't matter much on who was friend or foe since both groups where running for their lives when all involved realized the greater threat.
The adventurers got in but the entire gate was crashed by the dragon and the carnage began. The majority of the outpost focused on the dragon. The adventurers kept running to reach their own goal. The dragon would NOT be deterred from its own goal... it's 'ring'.
Quite fun and a great ending / climax to the adventure!
The party didn't defeat the dragon but was very thankful to come out of it (mostly) whole.

LOL!!
Excellent. So interesting (and fun) when a huge monster suddenly enters a scenario . . "it changes everything!"
