Troll Lord Games

It's that time of year again. Families getting together, children running around, long evenings sitting by the fire, and convincing uninitiated relatives into playing a board game other than monopoly.

So let's hear it. What board game will you be playing this holiday season? Maybe a brand-new Fantasy Flight creation, like Dust, or maybe a family-friendly "Eurogame" like Puerto Rico. Or maybe you'll stick to a classic like Monopoly or Risk?

Personally, around this time of year, we sit down around the dinner table and enjoy a good ol' fashioned game of Twilight Imperium.

Over Thanksgiving my wife and I will be playing board games with my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law. We bought a variation of Settlers of Catan called Settlers of Caanan to try. We'll also be playing our standards: Giza, Raj, and Uno. Due to space in the car, we won't be taking our Settlers of Catan (with Cities and Seafarer expansion) or Mesopotamia. Any of the above games I highly recommend.

Going to visit the family this year in Dallas for thanks Thanksgiving this is what im taking with me.

We occasionally pull out "Give Me The Brain" or "Lord of the Fries" from Cheapass Games. RoboRally as well. The elementary school used to have "Family Friday Game Nights" a couple times a year, and RoboRally was always a big hit with the kids.

When my kids were younger, DinoHunt used to be a popular game in our house.

Might be time to break out Nuclear War and Nuclear Escalation soon. Skippy the SuperVirus has been feeling lonely!

With the family, it'd be old standbys like Monopoly, Chess, Yahtzee, and maybe some Life thrown in for good measure. I don't get to play my "gamer" games (Diplomacy, Runebound, Twilight Imperium, and a few others) with the family...they're simpler folk.

I really wish I hadn't gotten rid of my ASL stuff. Oh well, there wasn't anyone else around here that played anyway. Gotta give another vote for Dragon Lairds and Robo Rally as well.

You might want to check out the ASL Starter Kits (they're up to #3 or 4 now). I think they're all self-contained with everything you need to play the scenarios included. Together they make up a "programmed instruction" approach to ASL which seems to work for getting new players into the game, instead of smacking them with the whole bloody rulebook right away. (And what was Bob McNamara smoking when he put the Collateral Damage rules as virtually the first things you read?)

In any case, relatively cheap way to get back into ASL if you've got a potential opponent who's at all interested in the genre.

Of course, my kit sits untouched except for the annual trip down the road a bit to Winter Offensive.

I assume these are out of print? Getting players wasn't a problem. Keeping them was. I guess playing against a real infantry soldier was a deterant.

Favorite ATM is probably Race for the Galaxy with expansion. I play a lot of games but R4TG has kept our group's attention the longest. Huds0n doesnt game with us so his list will differ from mine in all likelihood, but these are the games we tend to play of late (the list grows mighty long if I include the games we play only occasionally):

Family style, we sometime get a game of Kill Doctor Lucky in. Every once in a while we play Maul of America, Shogun (Samurai Swords), Colleseum, Vegas Showdown, Puerto Rico, and Talisman (2nd or 3rd edition).

I'm looking forward to trying out Talisman edition 4.5, because it should be better then 4.0.

Let's see...the kids have get a kick out of playing Pirates of the Caribbean LIFE. We've also played Sanctuary by Mayfair Games.

I've just recently played ZOMBIES with my daughter. Of course, I had to clear the path to the helo pad so that we could both escape!!

It is odd, I have been a gamer and game designer since 1974 and all the rest of my family couldn't be bothered about gaming. I've tried and they just aren't interested, sigh. Apples to Apples is about all they would even try and that gets old real fast when you have had fun playing hobby games. I am dusting off my favorite game "Fortress America" to play it the day after Thanksgiving with my gaming friends.
