Post Apocalyptic Literature

Post by Combat_Kyle »

OK, the nerd gods have sent me a blessing. I signed up for a class class "Forms of Fiction" at my University this semester. One never knows the topic of this class til the first day, so its a crap shoot. It could be a topic such as Dickens, women authors etc. I was a bit nervous and wondered what I got my self into. Then the gift from the gods came; the topic is Apocalyptic Literature! Jus a run down of the books (and movies!)

War of The Worlds - H.G. Wells

The Book of Revalation

The Lathe of Heaven - Ursula LeGuin

The Stand - Stephen King

Blindness - Jose Saramago

I Am Legend - Richard Matheson

The Children of Men - PD James

Riddley Walker - Russell Hoban

Watchmen - Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

Films:

Mad Max

Akira

Six-String Samurai

A Boy and His Dog

La Jetee

The Last Man on Earth (with Vincent Price)

Its going to be alot of work, but it should be fun.

If you haven't read them already you may want to add Robert Adams (?) Horseclan series. At least up to Bili the Axe.
Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.
Sounds obvious to me! -Gm Michael

It sounds like it will be a very interesting class. I've read some of the books and have seen some of the movies, so I'll be interested in seeing your thoughts on them.

Incidently, I recently purchased Waterworld at Bestbuy and watched it again. Even though Costner overplayed the Mariner's "anti-social" personality, it really was a great film (especially for $5.99)!

Should be fun. I've seen all those movies, and read some of the literature, so I know sort of what you're "up against." I think, though, the most fun would be to take those and then expand on the related items, like 12 Monkeys (inspired by Ja Jetee) or Left Behind (actually, this one I would avoid, but that's only because I'm not thrilled by religion.)

Wicked....Watchmen is an awesome piece of work.

When I took a class like that "Sci-Fi and Fantasy" I had to read Magaret Atwood...

My teacher suprisingly appreciated it when I described Atwood as a self-serving, man-hating lesbian using books as her podium.

Thanks for the additional suggestions, but I have three other classes on top of my other real world stuff. Besides this class and its heavy reading load I am taking Latin, Technical Writing and Editing, and History of the Arab-Israeli Conflict. All classes are 300-400 level except Latin (it should be hard enough as is). But I will put those books on my growing reading for fun list. I plan to get to it when I am done with school. I am just thrilled that the topic of the class wasn't the Bronte sisters or Victoria literature, ack.

Indeed. I love and collect Sci-Fi movies and always read the book they're based on (when it is) and it's mucho fun to compare and contrast!

I liked it, and yes, its available from Amazon.

Too bad the course is only so long... there are all kinds of really great things one could theoretically add, and some really horrible ones too.

Im in total agreement, a few films/TV series come to mind; Samurai Jack, George Romero Zombie movies, 28 Days Later. But its a 16 week course and I think there is plenty of stuff as is, I have to have time for gaming.

A favorite post apocolyptic of mine is The Postman. The book more than the Costner flick. As usual, the movie hacked the origional book to bits, but that's movies in general, right!

Why the heck is Watchmen on that list? Granted, it's been a while since I read it, but I can't remember a post-apocalyptical aspect in it.

Its a series thats as pulpy as all get out, but try the Stones of Power series by David Gemmell. A reciently deceased author that did some fantastic sword and sorcery and post apocalyptic..

Especially....
