I couldn't resist. I DID try to stay calm.
The part that really irks me is the 'they like it because they can't bear to part with that OLD game' stuff. That and 'heartbreaker', like a red flag in front of a bull.

A better question is: why does "balance" matter? Who needs to feel coddled and supported, so they aren't "mistreated" by the "mean players and evil DM?" When did roleplaying turn into Barney?

What would you all say are the most powerful classes in C&C? You can include some of the ones that have been put out as add-ons.

Fighter, Monk, Ranger, Assassin, Cleric, Wizard, Illusionist (with a CK who's not afraid to be fair with illusions.)
From elsewhere... my Ogre and Skaar.

Any class I play.

"Or if there is any attempt at 'balance' it looks to be just a nod. The whole system looks to me like an attempt to put as many options as possible into as simple and easy to run an engine as possible. I don't see how you could really equate a spell-slinger with a sword-swinger and have any hope of accuracy in balancing the two anyway. So probably, all the designers were looking for was the ability to make up a group of PCs with the paradigm that one fights, one casts spells, one scouts....and each one does that one thing best. And it looks like the Trolls have managed to do that AND introduce a mechanic that allows everyone competence in general. All without complex, picky, rules heavy balancing mechanics. It is about distribution of roles, more than ensuring equality of power. This game truly does capture that old feeling for the game I had when I first started playing, but is by far the easiest to play and run of any other version of D&D, period. Under the circumstances, something so minor as different numbers on the experience tables does not even register on my radar."
I really liked that, so I thought I would paste it here and tell you that.

I heard paladins were really powerful too. Is this true?
How does the paladin stack up against the fighter?

In a straight fight, the paladin will lose, because he will never get additional, attacks, and has no spells to cast. The fighter gets additional attacks (compared), and has a better attack bonus. If they are of the same level, same abilities, and roll the same... the fighter will win, simply because he can deal out twice the damage (after 10th level.) No one is as good in combat as the fighter (that's why its called "fighter"); monks and rangers can get pretty nasty, but the ranger is circumstantial, and the monk needs a little improvement in the AC department.

Well, is that paladin fighting an evil fighter?
If so, a paladin has 'Divine Aura', Lay on Hands', and 'Smite Evil' to help even the playing field. I'd still favor the evil fighter but this does make a small difference. But two attacks per round vs one does favor the fighter to be sure. It's a closer fight at lower levels with the Paladin having a bit of an edge...

How good are wizards or illusionists? Pretty much like D&D 3.5 where they aren't too good early on but at high levels they own?
Also, has anyone set progression up past lvl 20 for their campaigns?

by serleran
Wizards are always good, and illusionists... well, that's up to the CK because a lot of their spells rely on judgment. As for spell progression beyond level 20: rather pointless seeing as practically nothing will ever get to such a point. Besides, with the fact that most spells don't cap, a 25th level wizard's fireball is 5 HD better than it was at 20th... but, I would say, all spells/day, eventually, max out to 7. If you need more spells than that, and you're that level, you're making your own magic items.

I was actually asking about exp progression ast lvl 12 in general for all characters.
I have info aobut what abilities characters should get post 12 but I need exp charts for the classes to go past 12.

by serleran
They are in the PHB. Not the "chart" but the XP needed which anyone able to add can determine on their own.

Thanks, Treebore. I have been thinking about exactly what I am looking for in a game a lot lately, and that all sort of came out in a rush.
Sigh. I bet I get flamed good when one of those guys notices.

I just thought of something.....
I know the player guide says you add your character level to most of your attribute checks BUT...is this taken care of by adding your basic to hit bonus?
Another words, in a situation where you would normally use your character level as a bonus, woud you accomplish this by simply adding your basic to hit bonus or do you have to add the basic to hit bonus and character level both (if either are applicable)?

BTH and level are two different things except in the case of the fighter.

You only add your base to hit bonus when rolling an attack roll. You add your character level to any SIEGE check your DM determines would be improved by additional experience in your class. For example, a wizard would get to add his level to a SIEGE check to understand some arcane writing. A fighter would probably not get to add his level if he were to try the same check.
To clarify what Peter wrote: by coincidence, a fighter's base to hit is the same as his character level. That is a level 3 fighter, for example, gets +3 on his attack rolls (in addition to strength, etc...). For any other class, the base to hit number is lower than their character level.
(I may have slipped into D&D 3.x mode for a second there. Do I need to say character level, or can I just say level?)

What gideon_thorne was that the BTH is independent from the level but that the a Fighter's BTH is the only class where it matches the character level. The BTH is not added to checks and is only applicable in combat.
A fifth level Fighter has a BTH of +5 where as a Rogue would only have a +2 and a Wizard a +1 at the same level.
The BTH is not used for any other application but the Character's level is used for Saves and other class related skills.
Hope that helps,
Moriarty the Red

The only time BtH is used is for attack rolls, and, if some monster attack says "modifies by BtH." For fighters and monsters, BtH = level (HD for monsters, generally), but so? Its not a complex, difficult, thing. This is all in the PHB. Hell, its all in the Quick Start, and those are available for free.

Hiya all
The name's Kepli and I got here through a good friend of mine; GreyTale.
I'm an IT Consultant from the Netherlands and have been into RPG gaming for about 18 years now.
Currently I am a Webmaster at Dundjinni, one of the Four Ugly Monsters and a Core Member of Little Kingdoms (no site yet). I did some mapping work for Monte Cook and Digital Adventures and try to learn a lot of different 2D and 3D programs
There is a lot more to tell, but I won't bore you with details, unless you ask for them
Happy mapping and gaming
