Since 4E is definately not my cup of tea, I needed another fantasy system to fill the void other than my occasional Rolemaster game.

Hi. I'm a long time lurker, short time member. Just wanted to introduce myself. Lifetime gamer of all sorts, whether it be roleplaying or miniatures. I've played just about every roleplaying game under the sun, but I have to say that my favorite is Castles and Crusades. I have very few qualms with the system, and it is house-rule friendly so what few there are can be remedied. I just wish that my local store supported it a bit more. I'm almost always the castle keeper, and when I'm not it's usually only a one-shot. But our ranks in the area have grown, thanks to the colossal failure of DnD 4E in the area.

Other than gaming, I enjoy archery, skeet shooting, Army of Darkness comics, and directing student films. I have three dogs and four cats and I probably account for a substantial portion of Coca Cola's income with how much Coke Zero I drink on a daily basis. I have an interest in history, particularly the bloody bits. I like nachos a lot. When I play C&C I am almost always a dwarf. I am a novice stage actor even though I hate going on stage more than just about anything else. I also enjoy throwing axes, which is not as hard as it looks. I am an Eagle Scout (highest rank of Boy Scouts, hard to get, too), I took two years of fencing, I'm a decent shot with a long-gun, though I've never gone hunting, I collect black-powder weapons, and winter is my favorite season.

That's pretty much everything.

Greetings! I'm John, 44 and a gamer since Jimmy Carter was in the White House. Much of my gaming "career" has been as a board wargamer, and I was an ASL playtester for a while. (Enough to get my own leader counter in Doomed Battalions!) I also have a weak spot for Market-Garden games.

RPG-wise, I started in the late 70s with D&D Basic set and Traveller. The 80s saw me in the Army and playing AD&D along with Traveller, though the 90s belonged to Shadowrun before ASL pushed out other games for a while. (Advanced Squad Leader - not just a game, it's a lifestyle decision!) Also dabbled in some D&D 3.5 and D20 Modern stuff earlier this decade.

Last spring, I decided to start running a face-to-face game for my son and his friends, who were all 10 or 11 at the time. Queries on RPG-dot-net for appropriate rules systems for kids that age that were more rules-light than 3.5 were answered by many strong recommendations for C&C. I snagged the Player's Handbook and it was like climbing out of the time machine in 1979, with that crisp new AD&D player's Handbook in my adolescent hands! It was exactly what I was looking for, a perfect vehicle for a reasonably experienced if rusty GM to use, and with fast, clean combat so there's an appropriate amount of head-bashing to keep the boys happy. Our group has grown from 2 to 5 boys, and it's a monthly event we all look forward to.

Outside of being a gamer & dad, I'm an 80s-era US Army vet (ex-paratrooper cavalry scout style), a former 2-way radio tech-turned-PC-tech-turned-systems-guy-turned-network-security type. I live in the Baltimore metro region and work at keeping the bad guys away from people's money.

Greeting CKDad!

I too just got back in to RPGs, last March. And after not playing since the mid-90's, I just updated my ASL rulebook to 2nd ed! You are right that game is a life-style. I started playing wargames and AD&D at about the same time you did, and had the same nostalgic feeling when I got that C&C PHB in my hands last spring. Same feeling again when I picked up the new ASL rulebook, and pulled all my old modules out of the box I had tucked away in the attic. I never did buy Doomed Battalions, the last module I bought was Croix de Guerre (still kicking myself for never picking up the PTO modules), but if I do, I'll wonder now which leader counter is yours.

Welcome to the Crusade! Glad to hear your son and friends love the game.

Hello to all the C&C'rs here.

My name is Chris and I started playign rpg's in the 80's with Runequest and Call of Cthulu being where my teeth were cut. I took a long hiatus/detour with crpgs, wargames etc but have recently (and happily) returned to pen and paper rpgs.

My first mistake was picking up the core 4e books. I justified these by telling myself that it would be easier to find a game but after having played it 4 or 5 times now I realize that the rigid structure, tabletop-wargaming feel and over-abundance of rules is just too much for me. I have been looking at C&C for a while and really love the way it makes me feel like I did when I played way back when.

I am married with 2 children. My son loves gaming along with his geek dad. I live in Los Angeles but I have recently accepted a great new job in northern VA, very close to DC so I will be going back and forth until the school year is over and then moving the family out as well. I love to paint mini's (something I will be doing in VA since I will be alone out there), I love to lift weights and trail run as well. My wife is a brilliant artist (if only I could get her to paint/draw fantasy art!).

I am hoping to get playing/CK'g a Castles and Crusades game soon. I even bought the ruleset for FGII !

Thanks and if anyone is in my areas leave me a message and we can try and get together!

Take care!

Rondor / Chris,

I know there's a lot of gaming down there in NoVA. You'll definitely want to check out The Compleat Strategist in Falls Church, and there are a couple other good game stores in NoVA proper. A bit further afield in Rockville, MD is Dream Wizards, NW of DC. There used to be a con or two down that way as well, but I don't know if any are still going concerns.

Hello new people! Welcome to the Crusade and may your gaming be as fun as it ever was!

FG2? Us cheap on line gamers use Maptools. Does the job very nicely and its free! Open RPG is another decent freebie too.

Hi all,

Despite much lurking and even a few posts, this is the first time I looked at the 'say hi' thread - so in the interests of belated politeness, here I am saying 'hi'.

I'm Keith and I'm a fantasist - no, sorry, wrong meeting - no, wait - right meeting - well, that's a relief... actually, by day I'm a psychotherapist (Psychosynthesis, for those who care about these arcane psychobabbler schools); I work privately and in a university, and I co-run some dramatherapy sessions each week for kids (10/11y.o.) who have behavioural/psychological issues. I'm in my late thirties, I live in Newport in south Wales, with my partner Helen.

At the moment I'm involved in an ongoing AD&D campaign as a player (ToEE), and I DM a smaller group 'en famille' as they say (currently adventuring on the Isle of Dread). C&C looks well juicy to my retro-tinged eye, and I'm hoarding material ready to unleash next year (esp. CZ, the Airhde texts and HH)

What else do you need? Well, Heruka is my nom de guerre hereabouts, Heruka being a Tibetan Buddhist deity-form, the blood-drinking wrathful one surrounded by wisdom flames, entwined with his consort on his bliss-wheel. I like that.

Other stuff relevant about me would be that I got the red box Basic D&D as a pressie in 1978, played avidly and read AD&D stuff I never got the chance to play until now, as I find myself reconnecting with the RPG world and the part of me that comes alive in that relationship.

My rationalisation for this is that, since the world as we have known it is evidently in a tumult of collapse and change, and the past is no indicator of the future anymore, and since lots of the coming changes may imply simplifications in how we live (less energy use, perhaps less techno-alienation etc), and since these changes will most likely feel painful and/or distressing as they hit, then anything that builds community, builds imagination and builds morale has to be a great thing. Right? And pen & paper RPGs hit that sweeet spot - they cost little, run for ages, take place in the imagination, build teams and families and gangs and communities based on shared experiences and narratives, and they can even be played by candle light when the grid fails its last saving throw. Something like that anyway.

I'm also into music, art, poetry (had a couple of books published a few years back), spirituality (studied just about all traditions at some time, but dwell mostly with the Tibetan schools of Vajrayana) - lots of stuff. That'll probably do for the time being.

Thanks for having me!

Welcome and well met to the new crusaders.

It is amazing how many of us share similar backgrounds. I started the wargame route myself back in the early seventies and started RPGing in 1978, and now I am running my kids in C&C.

James M. Ward here and this has been such a fun read, I thought I might add to it. I'm 57 with three grown sons who have kids of their own and a lovely wife who puts up with my gaming habit. I was lucky to meet Gary Gygax in '74 and he taught me how to play D&D. He also allowed me to write the first science fiction role playing game METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA. I had the pleasure to work for TSR for 21 years. I consider myself a novelist and game designer and have a lot of titles to my credit. The last one is the TOWERS OF ADVENTURE with the Troll Lord people and I'm extremely proud of that effort. I'm currently writing OF GODS AND MONSTERS a hardbound for Troll Lords and I'm the managing editor of Crusader magazine. I'm always looking for more freelance work and my favorite author is Robert Heinlien and his TIME ENOUGH FOR LOVE novel, but all of his books work for me.

My father introduced me to Heinlein at a very young age. Friday nights were "turn off the TV" and he'd read those books, those of Asimov's and H. Beam Piper's as well, + Tolkein for fantasy.

My father was very much involved with the Heinlein Society and had the pleasure of a friendship with Virginia Heinlein before her passing.

I've been reconstructing my Heinlein library as an adult, and I still reread them often. Actually, my own personal favorites are still his "juvenille" series.
Double Star and Between Planets were my favorites of those, with Stranger in a Strange Land being my favorite beyond that series.

I'm sure you've probably discussed this elsewhere - but was Orphans in the Sky an influence specifically on MA and the Warden?

I hope you other people won't mind if I quickly answer John's question. I hadn't read Orphans in the Sky before I did METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA. I did read it afterward and enjoyed it greatly. There are a lot of (quite by accident) MA themes in that book. Starship by Brian Aldriss was my real inspiration for MA.

Hello all.

My name is andrew, I'm 37, and have been gaming since receiving the Moldvay D&D Basic Set as a Christmas gift back in 1980. (You can insert the traditional hollow boast of gaming experience here, something along the lines of "You name it and I've played it!" which, whilst not strictly true is accurate enough to say without suffering an embarassment-induced aneuryism.)

I've owned C&C for a couple of years now but have yet to do anything with it. It wasn't until (re)purchasing an armload of 70s and 80s TSR modules the other day that I began seriously considering what sort of campaign I'd like to run with the ruleset. A quick reread of the books, a few hastily scribbled houserules and I'm ready to go! All I need now are a few players...

Anyway, it's nice to meet you all. I'm looking forward to nosing around here and basking in the light of your collective gamer wisdom. Hopefully before long I'll have something half-decent to contribute myself!

Regards,

Andrew.
