Converting Conan d20

Post by Frost »

Does anyone know how to convert Conan d20 products to D&D 3.5 or C&C? It seems like it wouldn't be that hard, but I don't have the Conan RPG core book (I received some of the city boxed sets for gifts). I imagine if I can figure out how the "defense" values work in Conan, converting would be easy enough.

If possible, you should just pick up a copy of the Conan Atlantean Rules Book. It would be vastly easier to do then convert. Though, you could always just use the C&C core rules as is, and just use the d20 Conan stuff for fluff n' flavor.

But as how to convert standard Conan to d20 or to C&C, never thought much about it. Good luck as it could be a worthy endeavor.

Yeah, I might be making a mountain out of a mole-hill. Basically, I'm curious how the "defense values" work. Armor seems to provide damage reduction, but each PC has a "defense parry" and "defense dodge" value as well. Actually, all I likely need to do is see what armor the NPC is wearing and look up the C&C or D&D version and ignore these values.

I guess I'm simply curious how the defense values work in Conan. I would like to pick up the core rule book, but I blew my gaming allowance on all these great sales recently.

Defense in Conan is broken in to "Parry" and "Dodge". "Parry" requires you to be armed in some fashion (melee weapon, shield, improvised device, etc) and is Parry modifier + Str + shield +feats or class abilities. "Dodge" requires a 5' space ajacent to you be open (for wiggle room) and is Dodge modifier + Dex +feats or class abilities.

Each class has a fixed parry and dodge progression, similar to a Saving Throw progression. Certain classes get better dodge than parry, others have better parries than dodge.

Player must decide weither to parry or dodge each round. There are optional modifiers for parrying depending on weapon size.

This is a simplified breakdown of it, based on memory.

Personally, if you were going to convert it to C&C, I'd just use a fixed defense progression (1/2 bab mabe) and leave it simple. I'd also just keep armor as AC, and add defense to it.

Unless your going to use "defense values" in your C&C don't worry about it. Their armor worn, DEX, etc... will tell you all you need to know for C&C.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I've got quite the collection of Conan D20 books but have yet to get to play them. Maybe I should think about doing some C&C conversion of this stuff so that it's more likely to get played.

ThrorII, thanks for the explanation. That helps a lot. I do think I'd stick with normal C&C armor class rules rather than adding in Conan defense rules if I convert this. It is very interesting to hear how Conan is played.
