I am an addict...
I am an addict...
I really, truly am. I wish I was kidding, but I am not. I have all the signs. Compulsive buying that I can't stop. Stockpiles so big that I will never run out. I'm a pathetic addict.
I really need to go into rehab, but I don't think they have a program for RPG addicts.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

This is a serious issue, even if you are poking a little fun at it. There is a disorder for shopping and/or spending money. There are some gamers/collectors that I have spoken to over the years who have literally bankrupt themselves keeping up with RPGs, boardgames, minatures, card games ,etc. Being a former game store owner, I loved these customers, but you could tell their compulsive nature to buy such things. It almost turns into an instinct to buy more game stuff, and neglect other more valuable endeavors, such as buying food. I have even seen the best of people turn to thievery to get more game stuff, and even let their families go hungry.
This is a serious issue with some gamers. It is a cumpulsive disorder that can be helped. If you think you are like this, get help. No offense or levity is intended in this post. It is real.
All the best,

Re: I am an addict...
Your not an addict, your building a legacy for future generations. One of these days, when we're all dead, this stuff might actually be worth twice what you paid for it.

I am not a true collector. I do not keep my stuff shrink wrapped/mint condition. I read and use everything, sooner or later. I let it get damaged. I damage it myself with hi liters, pens, taping in errata printed out and cut to size, etc...
My main RPG weakness is adventure modules. I have hundreds! Probably thousands! Or at least over a thousand. I will never, ever, run them all. Ever. Yet I buy more. Why? Because I am an addict.
I know what I have to do. I just don't want to. I don't want to stop. I don't want to stop buying the "A" series. I don't want to stop buying Goodman DCC's, or Paizo Pathfinders, or yet another Deity book written by Jim Ward, or the mythical CKG.
I want it all.
In order to stop, I would have to stop buying. Period. Its the only way.
I just don't want to.
The good news is I stick to a manageable budget. I don't run up my credit cards doing it. Cash only. I haven't been interested in the WOTC modules at all. I haven't bought Paizo Pathfinders in months, because I couldn't fit them into my budget. I only just bought some Goodman DCC's (actually got them in a gift exchange on the Necromancer Boards), but I bought them a bunch of Goodman PDF's to do the exchange.
Still, I have an addiction, I just have it somewhat controlled.

Well, what I'm getting at, mate, is that there are worse addictions to have than something that can bring a lifetime of enjoyment.
I'm a bibliophile myself. I probably spend 20% of my income on books.
You could be addicted to more destructive vices, just saying.

I feel for you there, Tree. I had a very respectful collection of OD&D, BD&D, and AD&D books...if I do say so myself. One day, I gathered the nerve to tell myself that I was done with collecting. Years of collecting stuff - most stuff that I had bought firsthand and never touched another person's hand - was gone to an auction on eBay for $3000. That was in 1999, if I recall correctly.
I didn't feel the pain right away - it actually took about 5 years.
I've been slowly getting things back, and my bookshelves have been filling at a snail's pace. Between re-buying old stuff and keeping current with purchases (GURPS, Star Wars Saga - yeah, I know, formerly D&D, and now C&C) my gaming materials are starting to become respectful (at least to me) again.
My advice would be to keep doing what you're doing. As long as it's not putting you into bankruptcy and you're enjoying yourself (and not feeling guilty), then have at it. You will regret stopping or worse, selling your books.

Oh I agree my addiction could be much worse. In fact it is, I am addicted to junk food and Pepsi. It could even be worse than those, but isn't.
I am just acknowledging I am truly an RPG addict. I buy stuff I do not need. Its a complete waste of money. Its something I do not have complete control of. Its a full fledged addiction, just like my junk food and Pepsi. Like those addictions the only way I will be able to stop is to stop, completely.
Something I do not want to do. At least not yet. I will readdress this dilemma after the CKG, yet another Deity book by Jim Ward, and the "A" series is out. Maybe then I can convince myself to stop.
I've stopped Pepsi, I can stop junk food, but haven't yet.
So I guess I'll stop junk food this month, and then after a few months of successfully stopping junk food and Pepsi, I can address taking control of my last addiction.

My "problem" has been all the great sales due to the onset of 4e. I typically don't buy much, but I couldn't pass up the deals (especially since a lot were for products that would soon be pulled off shelves). I've bought more this past year than I have in a long time.
The good news is that with 4e coming on, I can ignore a lot of stuff... all the new 4e stuff.
It does seem silly for guys like us to keep buying adventures. I have tons as well that I've never run. But, I look at it a bit differently. It's like buying a book or magazine. I get pleasure out of reading them, even if I'll never run them. My wife often (innocently) asks me "are you going to use it?" and I used to get defensive, but that was my fault. I like reading the stuff and also like amassing a library. I'm not going to use every product I own all the time, but there is a chance I'm going to use something from some book sometime.
Being a C&C fan helps... reasonable prices and a slow production rate (no offense ).

I too probably buy too much stuff. I'm happy to say that moving into 2009, there is little that is *new* that I feel that I need to collect aside from the offerings of TLG. Of course, there are other vices. I also love my DVD movies... music CDs... and non-gaming books.
But TheFrost is right... great sales and such haven't done much to discourage me from saving my money. In fact, I'm waiting for a rather large order from Goodman Games.
Managing what you have is important... and ironically I've been thinking of taking a critical look at my collection and purging items from it just before reading this thread.
There is a lot of stuff I just don't use. My large Star Wars d6 collection is just one example. Between 3rd party material like the Roleaids, 1st and 2nd edition AD&D... and now C&C I find I have a lot. Despite my preference for those systems, I still found myself collecting a bunch of other d20 stuff. If I thought I could get enough to make it worth the effort to part with some of it... I might but every time I think about it. I end up not doing it for a variety of reasons.
Damned if you do... damned if you don't I suppose.

Hey, there's an addiction ad on this page as I view it. Not sure it would help with this sort of addiction, but hey.

I'm pretty there with you Treebore; I have a habit of buying rpgs lately and reading them, to the point that I prefer them over novels.
Even when I know I probably won't play them, I still pick 'em up for a good read...

Mmmmmm. no.
Definitely not an addict. I unloosed a good horde of games I won't play at the GenCon auction last year. Old wargames, D&D stuff, a few collectors items like Star Frontiers, Runequest, etc. (That was my extra copy of Runequest, still have one Deluxe set as I plan on someday GMing it again.
Some stuff I won't sell. C&C, Traveller, Gamma World, Spycraft, My GURPS books (3e mostly for reference, but still used regularly), The Judges Guild Wilderlands setting original edition (Have all the maps except for Viridistan, The Map of the City State of the World Emperor, somehow I managed to accidently give that Wilderlands supplement away to a fan at a convention gaming round as a prize in 2001 or 2002 and have been trying to locate another copy for less than $100 ever since), Metamorphosis Alpha, Legendary Adventures, Morrow Project, Dangerous Journeys, Harn, and a few other odds and ends including a stack of Dragon mags, Twin Crowns d20, some Hogshead publishing d20 supplements, Bushido, d20 Witchcraft and some other lesser games.
I still buy adventures now and again, TLG stuff regularly, and new games from Indy designers all the time, but I generally keep it to about $50-100 a month except at Origins when I'll usually pickup $200-500 in new games, most of which I give away. My big Keeper from 2008 was Aces & Eights and The rest of the published Eberron books except for the Dragon Book. At GenCon it was Tower of Adventure & StarSiege, plus a good haul of Lou Zocchi's precision impact dice.
I also spend regularly on Minis, both plastic and whatever they are using these days instead of lead, Terrain, and art supplies to make terrain and buildings. I scratchbuild my gaming buildings making rubber molds and casting architectural components to build scale models. That and the Woodland scenics terrain.
I'd say about $1,500 a year on gaming, not counting hotel rooms and food at Cons (2-3 a year) , and pick cheap hotels in dangerous neighborhoods instead of the rudely expensive hotel at the convention center.

I feel for you Tree. I'm not as bad as I was. Hell, I sold off all my 1e and 2e stuff and just kept my d20 and C&C stuff. And I am looking to possibly clear more out.

I wouldn't worry about it Tree, as you said, you have your overall spending under control. As Peter pointed out, as far as addictions go, being addicted to books is a pretty tame one.
If you think about it, most of us are consumers...I mean how much of what we really buy to any of us really NEED. I'm betting there's alot of buying in everyone's life that they don't need. Question is, does it bring you some happiness. If so, and it doesn't hurt you or your family, go with it man...life's too short, enjoy stuff that you enjoy.
If its not bringing you joy (burned out) box it up and put it aside for awhile...I bet eventually you'll start feeling the urge to look at it again and you'll be glad you held on to your stuff.
Peace
Morty

Don't worry, the most I would do is quit buying. I realized long ago getting rid of my stuff would be a mistake. To the point where I said "expletives" to my wife whenever she suggested such absolute foolishness.
Nope. I won't make that mistake.

I am there with you guys. I have a very large collection of RPG stuff. Years ago I gave away or sold all of my 2nd Ed. AD&D stuff and a bunch of old Traveller, Champions, Chill, and other RPG supplements.
My only real regret was getting rid of the original Traveller (LBB) stuff, which I have now almost completly reacquired, but a substancial cost.
I have tons of RPG gaming stuff including all of my original 1st Ed. AD&D, Role Master & MERP, Conan, Call of Cthulhu, Traveller & Mega-Traveller, Star Trek, GURPS, Star Frontiers, 7th Sea, James Bond RPG, Spycraft, Top Secret, and 3rd and 3.5 D&D books and modules, and of course all my C&C stuff.
Although, I am thinking of unloading my hoard of GURP books, since we never play it anymore.
I see nothing wrong with this addiction. As my wife says, it keeps me off the streets, and she at least knows where I am when I am RPGing.

I had lost or sold all my 1e and 2e stuff in the mid 1990's. Then bought up the first three 3e books in 2001 and a couple of modules to play again. Didn't like 3e, so until last March, I was out of RPGing. Then discovered C&C and started buying up stuff. Now my shelf is full of just about everything C&C, the core books of 1e, plus the guides, Encyclopedia Magica, Rules cyclopedia and a handful of pdf printouts of old classic 1e modules. I've also got this great urge to keep buying stuff, but I've managed to restrain myself. I will only now buy what will expand my C&C campaign. So pretty much anything Troll will qualify, as will James Mishler's Wilderland stuff, but everything else I have a new rule, wait at least 3 weeks after I hear of something interesting before buying. That way I'm out of the 'heat of buying passion' if and when I decide it will fall under my purchasing rule (that is it will enhance my C&C campaign). I guess it is easier, if you lack a lot of free time so spending time to convert non-C&C stuff puts a heavy finger on the scales toward not buying something.
I made this rule when I realized I was buying stuff like Lejendary Earth core books, which I will probably never use and am already thinking of selling off. figured I should save money by not buying in the first place. that is if I can get thru that 3 week cooling off period. I try to avoid notcing sales, but this x-mas that was a tough one!! I didn't make it thru without a few Goodman pdf purchases. At least Castle Whiterock was only $5!! though printing it out and getting bound, will cost me.
