I don't know about the way the vast majority of people do things around these parts, but I tend to keep things a little chaotic in organization, or, did, until the wife told me I had to clean up and she started alphabetizing and arranging everything by system, despite my clear indications to the contrary... but, anyway, that's a whole separate thing. Anyway, in an attempt to codify some things, specifically for the wife, she asked me to go through a stack of papers that had "my book wants" and cut out the ones I had already and make it a single thing, and not a huge pile -- in doing that, I came across a list of Shadowrun books. I read it, and thought, what the hell... I have that, and that, but where the heck did they go? I looked at the shelves that house the Shadowrun collection and nope, not there. Then, I remembered something -- oh yes, I had placed them with the new Warhammer acquisition, but where did those go? Eventually, I stumbled on them, almost literally, and have since found a shelf for them (thankfully we'd gone out and bought some new ones just for this purpose). At least now I know where they are, and they're out of order, which makes me feel better.
Anyone else just look around and find something you knew you had but had forgotten about? Like one of those nifty moments where you see something and think "wow, cool, I do own that... how'd I get it?"

Since most of my collecting has to do with books, movies, and music which sometimes happens at a massive scale, you'd think so but no. A few times, my friends have asked me if *they* had a certain book as they just couldn't remember. On the other hand, I would remember seeing it on their shelf.
The only problem I've encountered a couple of times (when it's come to books) are buying books I already own but didn't recognize since they had a different title.
I now make it a point to double check the frontpages and copywrite information to see if the work was released another a different title if the author was prolific in his or her writings.
Where as I will pretty much remember everything I own, the same cannot be said about recalling where I might have gotten it in the first place.

No, this hasn't happened to me (that I can recall). I guess I just tend to remember what collectibles I own in my data-base brain. I have lost items over the years and wondered what happened to them only for them to turn up somewhere I would have never thought to look.

I've put my collection into an Excel file just so I could find what it is I need at some given point. If I want to 'discover' things I look there

Yes, I am working on a re-inventory. When my hard drive melted, I lost the one I had, and there have been numerous changes to the list of stuff since then, and, well, I've had other things to concern myself with... but, I've gotten some of it recorded again. Most is still in a state of "huh?" but I'll get 'er done.

It is funny you mention this serleran.
Last week I was milling around the house helping my wife go through some of her stuff out in the garage, when I found an old two-drawer cabinet buried behind some boxes. I opened it up and what did I find? All of my old Pendragon RPG stuff. I completely forgot I even still had all those books. I hadn't played it since like the late-eighties.
You never know what's out there just waiting to be found. Now I need to go up in the attic and see what other stuff is there I probably forgot about.
