Troll Lord Games

The young man playing a wizard in my group has yet to learn a few of the finer aspects of play, such as "Wizard in cloth shirt, armed with a dagger, charging into melee with an orc wielding a fine-looking axe will end badly." His frequent attempts at melee combat have dropped him below 0 hit points often enough that the other players have taken to calling his character "Phillip the Frequently Unconscious".

During a campaign in my Army days, frequent wilderness encounters with giant toads lead my paladin to become known as "Dirtral Frog-slayer".

Any humorous IC or OOC character nicknames come up in your games?

My druid-wizard character calls himself the High Priest of Demeter (this only causes him problems but, he believes it to be true because an actual priest of the god told him he was,) Lord of the Vine, Master of the Underearth, and Supergnome, Master of Stage and Spell. Actually, the players call him Supergnome too, for his penchant for using the jump spell and some other things he has done like doing a hammer pound (those things you see at carnivals where you try to hit the bell) and doing better than the burly warrior types who are obviously stronger (he didn't even cheat unlike when he won the ring toss...) but, yeah, there's that one.

Some others, too -- had a half-orc ranger with a 3 Charisma who kept himself wrapped in black fabric to avoid people seeing him and wanting to kill him on sight. As a joke, we just sort of started saying why he needed to do that, and it came down to him having a misshaped head, which eventually morphed into him having a "broken head." So, that is what he was called, out of character -- anyone said that to him in character and they'd have died.

There was Krimshaw the Frequently Dying. That was the title we gave one fellow named Carl who's Dwarven Battlerager got killed in pretty much every fight.

Just as well we ignored the rule on the # of times a character could be resurrected.

There was a dude awhile back who made a plains barbarian named Rikota.

Rikota became Ricotta became Cheese.

We called him cheese. Cheese the Barbarian.

He hated the name.

there was a fighter/thief of backlunish desent in our group called kaleem. after a resurection spell he was calles kareemed.

The Sunday group I play in calls my Paladin "The Dark Lord" for some reason.

We had Sir Darkness once for a character who seemed like he spent the biggest part of each session out cold.

Sword thrower, the knight, for a character who encountered a giant slug, and shouted "I throw my sword and run!" (So much for the fearless knight.

I ran an adventure early in my 3.0 days with my wife and a couple of friends. My wife had just started playing and was such a green player, and I loved it (the fascination of not knowing anything about the game, the creatures, and such is always a blast for me as a DM).

The party had heard that a black dragon had been spotted not far from town and had taken up residence in a cave complex nearby. Actually the black dragon was a gold dragon, cursed to have his scales changed to black. He was trying to find a cure for the malady and had apparently been spotted by some locals. The heroes had decided to investigate the cave complex and finally encountered what they thought was a black dragon. As they attempted to battle it, the dragon pleaded to stop the fight and to insist he was indeed a gold dragon. Finally, my wife yelled at the dragon breathed fire at my wife and her companions, singeing them all, but leaving them virtually unharmed. Though her companions were now trembling in fear, she stood resolute but looked over to the guys at the table and quietly asked, "Do gold dragons breathe fire?" They both looked at her, and loudly in unison, "YES!" My wife then decided to stop combating the dragon.

After that hilarious event, my wife's character was sometimes referred to and introduced as "The Gold Dragon." It always makes her turn a little red and we all get a laugh out of it (including her). Even now when my same friends come over to play and the subject comes up, we still find it terribly funny. My wife, who doesn't play with us currently (someone has to watch the kids, I reckon) still get a little embarrassed, but it's a fond memory she'll never forget.

I've mentioned this before, but we once had a player whose favorite character class happened to be the Magic User. At the time, he was in his late teens, but tended to act as if he was a "tween". He'd give his characters names that were not-very-thinly-veiled references to his other favorite activity (such as "Cannabis Sativa"...)

Anyway, as soon as his MU character(s) reached 5th level, the first 3rd level spell they'd learn/carry was...Fireball. Yep. "Fireball" was his answer to just about any combat situation, no matter what. He'd toss one at the drop of a hat, and he'd drop the hat if he needed to.

And it didn't matter to him if a 30'x30' fireball wouldn't properly fit into a 10'x20' room or corridor. Backblast? We're not scared of no backblast! That he was hoist by his own petard any number of times made no difference to him. Fireballs were the end all and be all.

He (and his characters) soon received the derogatory moniker of "The Fireball King", or FBK, for short. He thought it was great, and even referred to himself that way...

And don't get me started on attitudinally-challeneged Paladins.

My moniker, "The Ruby Lord" comes from my first character I played. I did a lot of firsts with him. He is also the most powerful PC I have ever played. I also, being in the military, played regularly with a lot of different people for decent periods of time, and when their PC's got to a certain degree of power they were invited to join a secretive group called "The Ruby Lords". Each member had a Ruby and Gold ring with Telepathy and many other powers enchanted into them, all made by my PC, who was also the founding member and defacto leader of the "Ruby Lords", so was the only one called "The Ruby Lord", who leads a group consisting of 16 of some of the most powerful PC's around.

I had a Viking character in a FR game once named Snorri (an honest-to-Odin Dane somehow transported to Toril) who became known as Snorri Trollslayer, even though he never fought one troll. Everything he fought that wasn't dwarf, elf, human, dragon, or undead fell under the catch-all heading of "troll."

That orc over yonder? "I bane attack da troll with my axe."

That ogre? "Dat troll bane fall!"

The Pit Fiend? "I bane run away from dat troll!"

We had "Ernst Sofabane" after he gutted a sofa looking for treasure.
