Newbie question about C&C print product

Hey everyone. I'm a fairly long time D&D player(20 years this year) and I was going through the 4E books and suddenly realized that all my best times playing were back in the 2E days. After pondering the matter for a time I figured out that I was getting tired of being bogged down with rules so heavy that miniatures were almost a requisite for playing. It didn't take me too long to find Castles & Crusades after that, and I am eager to give this game a chance.
OK, that's out of the way.
I have read that C&C is in its third printing, and I would assume that TLG would be selling the latest version from their site, but there is some text in the product information that casts some doubt on the matter. The info on the personalized edition of the PHB says that is is available in either the first or second printing with no mention of a third. This may just mean that it is a dated product, but then the text for the standard edition makes no mention of printings at all. So is the standard edition currently on sale fro the TLG site the third printing?

If you order the regular PHB, it will be the 3rd printing. If you order the Leatherette version you mentioned it is somewhere between the 2nd and 3rd printing.

Also be aware that the 4th printing of the PH and 3rd printing of the M&T will be out within the next couple of months. New layout, changes to the Barbarian and illusionist classes, errata fixed, new errata created, etc...
Have you downloaded the free rules version? It has all the rules basics and covers the first 3 levels of the game.

The second and third printings are identical in terms of information. The only difference is that the third printing is on 'glossy pages' while the second has regular paper.

Thanks for the replies.
I think that I will try out the free rules version and then wait for the 4th printing if it works out for me.

Is the personalized version of the PHB even available anymore?

Are you serious that's the only difference? I think I'd rather have the 2nd print, if that's the case.

2nd print is the win.
My 3rd print languishes in un-use.

No, it is not the only difference. The 3rd print PHB has the corrected and newly official poison rules (which can also be found in Miasmal Wyrms), corrected errata, some monster stats in the book, and other textual / layout changes -- to call the two "identical" is misleading.

In the rear of the book, page 124-125 I believe, there are stats for a few monsters in the examples of play.

Hmm, then maybe in the Attributes & The Game section. Look, I can't keep track of all these things man. I've got like 5 1/2 printings of these things rolling around in me skull!!! Sheesh.

Pshhhh, excuses!
I like some of the formatting changes in the 3rd print. I just do not like the paper from the 3rd print, whatever the paper is treated with smells awful and gives me a headache.

I actually one potential player because of the freakin' smelly pages! He's one of the guys coming up with me to GenCon, so maybe I can trick him into a game of C&C and we can gang up on him and get his silly ass to convert!

*chuckles* No, its not the only difference. The third printing has the fixed poison tables.

That's what I thought. Do we know yet if the upcoming printings are going back to non-glossy paper?

I think the 3rd printing also gives some details about the paladin or knight's mount.

It wont be on the same paper as the third printing. Something more durable.

I notice a thread for the M&T 3rd printing in the upcomming products section, but there isn't one (that I've found) for the PHB 4th printing there. Why is this? Is my serch-fu weak?
I can hardly contain myself for the new books!

If you go to the TLG website you can see the info for the 4th printing of the PH in the on line catalogue.
OK, I'll go get the link.
Here ya go.

Yes, there have been threads about the 4th printing, in this forum. So your searching wasn't in vain, just flawed in some way.
