Oriental Adventures for C&C

I was wondering if TLG was thinking of putting out an Oriental Adventures guide for C&C?
I always wanted to run or play an Oriental Adventure campagn! I have alot of ideas for this.

Steve mentioned something about an Oriental product of some kind in his roadmap for the year, back at in early January I believe. I don't recall any details being mentioned.
Full-blown Oriental-themed campaigns aren't my thing, but injecting a few elements helps the "We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto!" feeling I like to shoot for.

You may not want to hold your breath for this one. I do believe TLG will one day do such a product, but it can't be high on their to-do list.

You might want to petition Jim Ward - this might be good stuff for a Crusader article, or series of articles.

I would personally not feel comfortable with any product that has the word "Oriental" in the title. A much better title is Castles & Crusades: Silk & Spice.
EDIT: I know that such a book does not need to be any more true to the Silk Road than typical fantasy is true to the post-Roman world. However, I have a very difficult time looking at typical "Oriental" books without either laughing my head off or feeling extremely disgusted. The only decent RPG books I've seen in my whole life that deal with the region are the Legend of the Five Rings books.

If such a product were to be considered, I hope that the author considers that "Oriental" refers to the entire continent of Asia and not just Japan.

I agree with that.

Of course if you called it "Japanese Adventures" then you blow the whole setting unless its actually GOT Japan in it. Silk and Spice or whatever is acceptable I suppose but I wouldn't throw a fit over the word Oriental being in there any more than if they called C&C a generic western name like "Occidental Adventures". Let's face it: Europe is only a loose basis of most of these fantasy RPG base settings.

Sorry, but C&C Silk & Spice just doesn't do it for me - sounds too wimpy. Or some kind of setting for Frederick's of Hollywood or something - which really isn't that bad now that I think about it!
But for an Asiatic setting - no.

In terms of title, there's always Asian Adventures. That would not make a lot of sense if the setting and crunch were all based on feudal Japan, though.

Samurai and Scoundrels. Monks and Mongols. Fists and Feet. The Hidden Kingdoms.
There are a lot of ways to get the East, but many times it focuses on either one period (probably a good thing, but not if you want to have a little anachronisms like ninjas with shotguns...) or one particular region / location (which is probably a bad thing, unless this one thing is incredibly interesting, and then, there are so many of them to pick...)

Much to do about a simple title.
Also, Asia implies South Asia as well, and therefore becomes an increasingly inaccurate name. Silk & Spice would make sense in a "Silk Road" kind of way if anyone played a game historically rooted enough to care about the silk road.
Eastern Adventures may work - it has the same literal meaning as Oriental Adventures, and is, as far as I know, unoffensive.
Now what were we talking about before we got sidetracked?

The problem is that people think an "Asian" book should be about Asia. I don't want it to be. I want it to be like Legend of the 5 Rings, Asian flavor and spices, but no historical accuracy. If I want historical accuracy I can get that from history books and created my own classes.

What is wrong with "Silk and Spice"? It makes me want to reach for my wallet and........ pull out all the $1 dollar bills I have!
Seriously, I would love a "east" book but agree that an "OE" style book is too limited. It focuses on a small area (Japan) with a very narrow time frame (Katanas were only created fairly late in the history of Japan)
A Silk Road setting can include that plus sooooo much more. From the Japanese Samurai, through the chinese style of country, to the Mongol "barbarians" across the jungles of south Asia and then more so for India, then the mountain tribes of Kabul and Turkey. Oh so much potential!
Just my 2 cents, well a hand full of ones if "S&S" is cute enough!

Don't know if anyone has read 'Journey to the West' -- about a monkey, demons, Celestial Masters, fruit of life, ....

I've met alot of guys with asian backgrounds who have used the word oriental!! Are they racist? No. The only ones who have a problem with this are white folks. This is a product of our brain -washed politically correct times! The word Oriental has nothing to do with being racist. I love asia, especially Japanese culture.
How about all those scantily clad females splayed in rpg art who are built like men and lifting massive two handed swords? Now thats ridiculous and a big sack of BS!

How about a game based on Wuxia movies? A fast-play cinematic style with exotic settings. Also, I think the ruins at Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom would make a great adventure location.

I'd like to see one but influenced by Chinese & Korean myth culture. C&C: Golden Empire , Adventures in Lands of Silk & Jade. No samurai , Wu Jen , Shukenja , Yakuza or Ninjas (but Ninja-like Assassins ).

Personally I wouldn't want to see a big giant "Oriental" book encompassing Japan, Korea, China. I'd prefer smaller titles for each.

Did you all see this down in James' players section?
Quote:
The Guide will include the Martial Artist, plus details on adapting existing classes to Karak in order to have an "Oriental" feel. This will sort of resemble the Kits of AD&D 2E, but not be as intrusive; more along the lines of suggestions than requirements. I don't feel it is necessary to make a new class for every different variant; the Martial Artist suffices for its different focus, and the other core classes can easily be adapted.
Karak is a mashup of Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, and other various cultures, so there are a lot of influences and options to include.
As to monsters, those will eventually be written up in a separate Monsters & Treasures of the Wilderlands product. The Guide is going to be pretty huge as it stands!
James Mishler
Looks like it could fit the bill for me, though I'm still looking to give Silk and Spice a few dollars...

I would like to see some kind of "Far East" section. The problem is, at least for me, that game companies tend to go overboard and superpower the characters in the project because they don't think that Western players will be interested in it otherwise.
From every "Oriental" RPG book I have seen that plugs into an Occidental RPG, the Eastern characters tend to be more uber than their Western counterparts (3rd Edition OA and Vampire:The Masquarde's Oriental book series come to mind).
There is a way to do it without falling into that trap, but I guess many players wouldn't bother with it for whatever reason (for example: a fighter class is a fighter class, no matter WHICH country the character comes from. Just fiddle with the names of the equipment and, voila! Eastern warrior!). Probably it's because they really don't care about the Eastern cultures and just want new toys to play with.
Maybe, one of these days, a company will "do it right..."
