Yeah, I still think the need is a way off though given the current outlets in which C&C is available. You average non-gamer has almost a 0% chance of encountering C&C so catering to that market is pretty much unnecessary (unfortunately).

I really only use the old 1st edition dmg for fluff stuff, dungeon dressing, random dungeons, random wilderness, henchmen and hireling that sort stuff. Don't really need it all actually. I've stoled a few spells form 3rd edition but thats about it.

For your brand new gamer looking to start a group with other total novices? A greater explanation as to what RPG's are and what you can do with them. But, as previously posted, C&C Basic should fill that role quite nicely.

A C&C basic with a good introductory adventure will be a great introductory rpg tool. It would be great if the rules had memorable characters like the villianous Bargle the Black and Aleena the cleric(BECMI) or Rurik Runespear and his friends (RQ).

I played AD&D as a kid with nothing but a players handbook for over a year.

I did not need color pics, nor a "complete" set of books.

All I needed was the basic concept and my imagination did the rest.

After many years of steering away from D&D after 2nd E came out and dabbling in many systems seeking that "perfect" system, I became dissillusioned with all the rules schmools heavy incarnation of the newer D&D.

I felt a serious lack of the "magic" of imagination playing those systems.

It was seeking the magic of imagination that brought me to C&C.

It is that same quest that has inspired me to write my own. It may not be perfect, but it is perfect for me.

I can also account that I have turned 3 kids, (Females) onto C&C and they need nothing but dice, character sheets, and some koolaid to have a woinderful time in fantasy world.

To be honest I changed the system from 3.5 to C&C in the middle and they barely even noticed.

Just the tone of his posts...'sigh' reveals what sort of chap he is.

Let him play whatever others tell him is cool.

I for one am one of those grognards seeking to capture the nostaligia.

Give the C&C rules to someone who has never played an RPG before and see what they do with it. Some of you may roll your eyes at this but consider: Not all of us were friends of GG. Some of us had to start all by ourselves. I am sure more than one of you besides me fit this category.

Actually, I think the vast majority of RPGs do not have mandatory "referee guides" of any sort. Just one volume. Most new players just learn enough to a:make a character and b:fight. Then the brand new GM just throws bad guys at the rookies and toss some roll playing in between.

It's only the various "D&D proper" games that you have need for a DMG or GM guide of any sort. Refer to any Palladium, Green Ronin, GURPS 2nd or 3rd edition, and White Wolf games.
