I"m not seeing it. Did someone hide it from me?

It looks like several threads bit the dust between last night and today. I dunno what's up with that, but I noticed two threads I posted in last night that I was gonna check up on that just disappeared.

Yeah, I've seem to have lost a few #'s on my post count. Didn't notice it until just this moment. Got me?!

It almost got me -- somehow my password was changed. I cleared the cookies, like I do every now and then and went to log back in and it was all like "umm, no." So, I tried to reset it, and it didn't like my the email address... so, I pestered Peter and had him change my password as I dangled for half an hour and got back to change my password to something else.

Wow, this is major!

Is this another freeabb.com issue?

Are the TLG site admins aware of this problem and what steps are they taking to find out what happened?

Does Steve know of this problem?

Just wondering . . .

I've sent an email off to the freeyabb people to see if it's a known issue. Past that, I dunno what's going on. Unless one of the admins went in and deliberately cleaned out active threads (unlikely), then it pretty much has to be a freeyabb issue I think.

It appears that the powers that be at freeyabb are doing things involving moving servers and the like.

There really isn't anything that can be done on this end though except wait till they are finished doing so.

Again with the "pass the buck" (they are responsible, not us) to freeabb.com B.S.

Please . . . how about "pass the forum" to a REAL provider and tell those clowns to cram it!

Really.

And if those 'real' forum providers had the same problem, and they do sometimes, the answer would be entirely the same. It has to be fixed on their end, not this one.
Course, moving to a new forum provider has an even bigger problem. Basically having to start over again and pull over all the membership and have some 1500 + people re register.

Well . . yeah ~~ NOT!

So what backups have you and the other admins done then for this forum? When the "fix on their end" is complete, you only need to do a restore and all is well.

[Personally, I could not give a crap about my thread, but there are a boat load of members that expect a better "management" of this forum]

Just sayin'

Me? I haven't done any back ups. Computer widgets are not my area of expertise and I'm more likely to cause more damage than I fixed.

There have been other incidents of threads disappearing (and not caused by admins deleting threads), including one or two I posted. And if it gets to the point that somehow it becomes vitally important that I repost my bit on thief percentile scores, I will. But beyond that, its not really a vital loss.

I believe there have been backups done by the more techno minded a little while back.

But I still don't see why one or two missing posts and a minor scattering of threads out of some hundred thousand or more are 'bad management'. Praps the standards and expectations are just a tad high?

Wait... this is the 'What gaming stuff are you reading thread' that disappeared? Wasn't there something like 50 or 60 pages in that thread?

I've seen circumstances where a handful of posts vanished... and even new threads... but this?!

This is odd. Any official word yet? I'm assuming not, but hey, I thought I'd ask.

Um, why don't y'all just start a new one? I'm sure there are not many people at all that go back deep into that thread to read. It's probably just the current page or two that is even looked at.

Haven't gotten a response yet. I looked in to doing regular thread backups in the past but these options are disabled by default from freeyabb. Believe it or not, we have looked at options to migrate to a new backend. We put some serious time into this and it might be time to revisit the issue.

I went to it many times to search on stuff that I've seen on eBay or read about in Paizo and NobleKnight emails, etc. It was a good archive/resource for what peeps were buying or reading with regard to reviews and thoughts on a particular product.

I value our member's opinions over those at RPGNet and other places for gaming material.

Evidently, from what I have been reading over at the support forums, there are plans in place to have backup options available, for a fee.

There is no default backup option. Our backups are freeyabb's backups. Chances are they had an outage and the thread got chopped. We have absolutely no control over this.

Also, our forum admins aren't paid to police this joint. We do it in our free time and because we enjoy it. We're just as annoyed with the forum software we're stuck with as everyone else. I'm sick of randomly being logged out, randomly not being able to post, and randomly having unread tags turned off.

Now we're randomly losing threads.

I've debated moving to an up level version with freeyabb, but they require a new forum be created in that version and then they will migrate your old forum for you at a time of their choosing. And there's no guarantee everything will work properly. It seemed less of a headache to leave it alone.

Believe me, if there was something to be done, I'd do it, but the only people with the power to do something about it are in Little Rock. Most likely, that solution is going to have to a "start over" solution on a hosted (read: not FREE) server.

The folks here with Admin privileges have very little to say about it that hasn't already been said. Since freeyabb sucks so horribly, I'd just as soon start over on a new host, but I can't make that call, and neither can Peter or Breakdaddy or anyone except Steve.

So, please, for the sake of the prevention of mutual annoyance and misunderstanding, don't lay this anywhere except on Freeyabb, which sucks to high heaven.

At one point, I had a tool that would do the backups from a script, essentially scanning everything and copying it, but I have now lost it -- the intent was to migrate the old TLG forums from ezHAck to here, but, oh well.

I am sure there are ways to do it without actually using a built-in backup, but it is probably time consuming and perhaps limited, such as not having access to the CKG forum due to lack of "membership."

*shrugs* The occasional thread or post loss, and odd bobble in speed doesn't really bother me that much. It happens less than 5% of the time after all. The hosting and the forum is free, though, and expecting it to be perfect all the time is unreasonable. IMHO, anyhow.

Yeah, one of my threads vanished as well. And when I checked the "find all posts by Finarvyn" part of my profile it wasn't listed there, either.

Not that it was that important, but it's frustrating to post something and then have it vanish.
Unless it's a massive conspiracy by the mods to silence me. Of course, in that case this one will vanish as well....

Eh, like I said, same thing happened with a couple of threads of mine. But then again, maybe Davis thought my percentile thief idea was so cool he copied it and made it vanish?

Pete, who hosts the main TLG site, and is it possible to put the forums on that server? From personal experience, setting up a forum on a server isn't difficult. The main stumbling blocks are ensuring that all the scripts work and that all the file permissions are set properly.

Not sure. Steve handles that end. But the thing is, no one here really has the time and expertise to devote to such a thing, as Fiff noted above.
