Dave Arneson update

I read that Mr. Arneson passed away (posted by JamesM, #36). You will be missed sir.

If anyone can confirm or deny this early report, please let me know

EDIT: Apparently I spoke too soon (thankfully!). Mr. Arneson is evidently under hospice care and I share the hopes of others on this board that he may yet prove to be more resilient than his doctors foresee.

Indeed. It's sad to see another founding father of RPGs pass away.

Alas. I think I'll take a look at Blackmoor d20 when I get home.

My next session will definitely have to include some sort of tribute...

Posts are showing up on some forums, but so far no source has been found to confirm his passing.

Wikipedia locked his article, as people were attempting to edit the entry without multiple verifications.

While it may be true, I'd like to wait and see before commenting further.

It would appear that Dave has not yet left us -- he has been moved to hospice, but is alive. Therefore, rather than recounting tales of woe and sadness, I urge a thought for recovery sent instead... we may not yet lose him.

Thanks for the confirmation Serleran. This is why I named this thread "update instead" of a more woeful title.

I share the hopes of others on this board that he may yet prove to be more resilient than his doctors foresee.

I've got to admit that Dave's work didn't touch me as a DM as much as Gary's did, but this is still a sad day for me as a gamer. The two founding fathers of D&D are passed away.

The Miniatures Page forum just posted that Dave has passed away.

Which of course was an unconfirmed and erroneous posting...

*snippage*

I've been out of touch for several weeks and I saw this thread and damn near had a heartattack. Thankfully, Dave is still with us.

Edit: Oops..seems this was released without the family's approval. I went ahead and deleted the copypasta (sorry...just doing what the family wished).

Monte Cook confirms Dave has passed

A light has flickered and been extinguished, but we remember the light it brought us, how it beckoned to and burned... thank you for everything Dave. Your likes shall not be seen again.

the self must also die;

I know one thing which never dies:

the reputation of each dead man.

KODT said it best with this poem. I didn't write it but I feel it. Dave is now sitting at that big table in the sky. God Bless.

The Empty Chair

Eulogy for a Gamer

There is an empty chair,

at the table this day.

A hallowed place where,

a friend once played.

The roll of his dice,

my ears long to hear.

Or perhaps it would suffice,

if he should suddenly appear.

With character sheet in hand,

and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share.

All his friends would stand,

as he sat in the empty chair.

I hear his voice a-callin,

and it ties my heart in a knot.

For he cries, Though a comrade has fallen,

You must play for those who cannot.

We conquered worlds on the run,

he and I in the name of fun.

And as others may come and go,

I make both both friend and foe.

But what I long for most,

is our past now long a ghost.

Godspeed Dave, you will be sorely missed. Say hello to Gary for all of us and make sure to save us all a spot by the gaming table.

All I can say no more than what I said earlier when it was thought he passed. This seems the right weekend for some OD&D.

Well, as it appears to be confirmed, I must say that my heart is heavy this day.

DA1 was one of the first modules I picked up after starting playing. I really didn't know who Dave Arneson was at that time, but I knew one thing - Blackmoor was a fantastic place. After that, and after I learned who Dave was, my adoration and respect for him only got stronger.

We lost a legend. We lost a great person. Rest well, Dave...rest well.

Can't really say anything else that I didn't already say in the other thread, or in this one. I'm glad I had the chance to meet him a couple of times. I echo those who didn't really know much about him in the 80's. I became more aware of his contribution at least by the mid-90's-present. He will be missed.
