What's your favorite part of a new game/campaign?

Post by Lord Dynel »

Last evening, I was musing how much I like new games. I started thinking about all the interesting aspects of a starting a new game or campaign - rolling stats, picking race, class, equipment... there's just so many cool parts of the new game that I love and I thought I'd ask everyone what their opinion was.

I voted 'the actual first game' since that is usually a peaking of the fun potential, as Timothy Leary would've called it - but also, up until that point it really isn't a game at all - more an inner frisson of expectation, a mind-w@nk, a gateway to obsessive insanity, a tiny but swelling point of possibility... don't get me wrong, I love that visioning and planning and creating phase as much as the next poet - but if it just stays there it is at best a delicious private experience, at worst, a very poor use of one's time. The thing only lives when it gets played, that's where it meets the world, and emerges from nascent to manifest energy.

Most of those choices are for players, and I'm generally the CK so I went with, "Something else not listed."

My favorite part is getting the setting ready.

Most of the time I run my game "sandbox style". Pick the setting, seed it with multiple plot hooks and adventure seeds and cut the players loose to see which way they go.

I love creating a character. Not by rolling dice or any mechanical thing, but creating a fun character to roleplay in a campaign. For me this usually entails a few days of thought thinking of a background, unique attribute/quirk and personality.

DD - I understand what you're saying about running. I run way, way, way more than I play, so I feel ya. I was trying to focus on just the player aspect though.
I didn't want to put in an option for "running" for that very reason. I, likewise, didn't necessarily want to put in a option for "all of the above" because I wanted to see what everyone's opinions and choices were for specific player-oriented aspects of the "new game."

I voted for the 1st game, I enjoy making characters, but until I actually get to play I don't know what I have. Many times I have created a character with a "concept" in mind, but a few sessions in he has morphed into something completly different.

I feel that pain, brother. Probably from a different standpoint, but pain nonetheless.

I went with rolling stats.

Up until that point the protagonists of the campaign are complete unknowns. I love watching the dice gods weave their magic and seeing the players' imaginations get all fired up.

I love all the 'oohing & ahhing' that goes with it too.

I picked the first game as well, though there's a big exception to that in my book - creating Traveller characters is a mini-game unto itself and can be really fun.

I went with the last choice, as all of the other choices are a part of what I like. You could say, I like the whole thing about starting a new campaign.

I like the whole thing, especially finding out how the possibilities play out.

I like to build the setting, think of campaign hooks, that sort of thing. The prep work, as DM.

As player, all the polls options equally.

As a player I like rolling up the stats, I like to use the numbers to envision what sort character has just been determined by the dice.

As a CK/GM I would chose The actual first game or something else.

The something else would be crafting the setting. Modifying and borrowing ideas from to make it somewhat unique.

I'd think it was the actual first game, when you are just discovering things like "I can kill a hobgoblin" or "getting shot sucks". Or the fun in Paranoia of discovering "I died? Well, I'm not going to open that next round then."
