Cowboy Diplomacy makes a comeback!

Post by moriarty777 »

Well, tonight I had a special treat! I got a pass to see the new Star Trek movie and I was pleased with the movie.

I won't spoil the movie for those who have been wanting to see it but let me clarify my position as a fan. I've always enjoyed my Trek but the classic series is timeless IMO. I did enjoy Next Gen overall both DS9 and Voyager had their good points if you looked to the series as a whole. I was optimistic with Enterprise but sorely disappointed with the results. That said, I still have not seen episodes from DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise, as the overall franchise went on, so did the numbers of episodes I missed.

There was a reason for this and quite frankly it was the direction the franchise was heading in. On the other hand, I have seen the Next Gen and the original series more times than I can count. My love for the movies was also grand but my favorites are among those featuring the original crew.

Suffice to say I was curious but eager to see this 'new vision' of Star Trek.

I really had fun with the movie -- there's no lack of action and fun throughout it and the special effects, though well done, do not steal the spotlight from the actors who have the mammoth task of playing these iconic characters. I'm equally happy to say that the casting of these characters are well done.

What about the purists? Well, like a game we all know and love, it isn't first edition. The movie will not please all Star Trek fans the same way that C&C does not please a certain segment of the old school playing public. Liberties are taken in the telling of this story but I believe there is enough to please a lot of these fans to at least appreciate this vision of Star Trek. Perhaps enough to make peace with it too. I wouldn't say the movie is perfect but if you are a fan like me, and can be a bit open minded, you'll be left wanting some more.

Good! Sounds like they did what I hoped they would! Hopefully I will get to see this next week.

Good "non-review" mort!
I agree with you, though. I'm a pretty big fan of the first two series, and felt the franchise was failing a bit after them (and even started towards the end of the TNG run).

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I'll be seeing it soon, myself, and hope to enjoy it as you did.

I thought you hated the film! LOL!
And I never got even one popcorn!
I also saw it and I think even the die hard Star Trek 1e fans will like this Star Trek 4e!

The cast was perfectly cast and they did a great homage to the original cast and characters.

Perfect Re-Boot to an old classic.

Nice. I'm not sure if I'll consider it true Trek or not, but I'm looking forward to the movie even more now with some reviews in. BTW, professional "reviewers" seem to be liking this movie a great deal too. All of them say it's action-packed and really fun to watch.

If you had never seen a Star Trek show or movie of any kind, you would still enjoy this on it's own.

My girlfriend went with us and she is not a big movie fan nor is she in any way a Star Trek fanatic... in fact she knew practicaly nothing about it until I mentioned to her that we had special preview passes for this AWESOME movie. I talked her ear off for days before we got there and then some more aftwards. In the end, she loved it and is probably the best action/sci-fi movie she has seen in a long while.

.... star trek or not, it is an awesome movie.

One thing that bothers me about the advertisement is the whole line "this is not your father's Star Trek" as if that is a bad thing. Current music trends are not what my father would have liked, either... and they tend toward the suck.

Maybe its just old age grumpiness (heh, I'm barely in my 30s...)

Oh well, I still need to see other movies before this one. So, it might have to wait behind a long list.

Yes... it was thanks to Jynx, that I was able to see this awesome movie. Many thanks once again on an awesome birthday gift!

As for the popcorn, well it's not *my* fault it was beyond your reach!
As for the analogy, I was trying to go for a AD&D 1st Edition / C&C comparison as opposed to the 4th Edition one. As far as I'm concerned, another Berman / Braga produced movie would have been akin to 4th ed.

This is a good flick, and it is accessible to people who aren't big into Star Trek to begin with. Personally, I think those who are familiar with the original series and the original crew will appreciate the movie all that more even though it isn't necessary.

As I flipped through the channels this morning, a heard a comment on Canada AM which the host made that had me chuckle a bit:

"It's ridiculous how good the movie is."

Looks sweet. I wonder if it's going to be GTA in the Old West, because that would totally work for me.

I'm not sure how much it uses the same sort of 'open concept' that the GTA franchise uses. Maybe someone who's played the older Red Dead Revolver (the title previous to the Redemption title) can let us know how it played like.

However, I do have and played Gun for the 360 which was a lot of fun and if Red Dead Redemption is anything like it (or better), I may have to pick it up.

Red Dead Revolver was the win. It was a moody little western in the spagetti style. The characters were well thought out and overblown, perfect for mining to use in rpgs. Wasn't GTA really more like expansive set pieces than sandbox. My favorite part was the slow mo system for High Noon style duels. Rawked Super Hard.
