Random Encounter Charts

i have noticed what seems to be a slight increase in interest in once again using random encounter charts. There are of course the good old resources to use, like the 1E DMG, and others. However, in case you are interested, and want something possibly of more interest, and ease of modifying to personal needs, which also means available in PDF for a decent price, I highly recommend you check this out:

Yes, its made for 3E, but the only thing about it that is really 3E is monster names unique only to 3E. But hey! Its PDF! Which means easier to modify and print out tables custom perfect to what you want.

If your interested you may want to check out the "Mother of all Treasure Tables" too. Loot in that thing makes me think of adventure ideas. Its all mundane, though, so you would have to add any magic. Its also for 3E, but the value ranges make it handy for any gold based RPG. Besides, if you eve get tired of the 6,000 GP result you can look in this thing and make it a lot more interesting than just gold pieces. Just use the write ups they have in the 6000 GP range.

Anyways, just a couple of things I thought people might be interested in for their games.

If there is anything else you might be interested in let me know, maybe I or someone else does know about it and will tell you what it is, and hopefully where to get it.

Tree, I vaguely remember looking at this long ago when it came out. If I'm thinking correctly, doesn't it have the Creature Collection monsters included on the charts? I remember that was a deal breaker with me, as I didn't use them. I don't remember the treausre charts...it may have been I never got that far into the book. I might give it another looks, if you think it warrants it, though.

There is, also, and of course, SG1: Engineering Dungeons which has its own random encounter system.. though, not for "non-monsters."

Yes, I believe at least some CC's were in there, mostly because Clark Peterson wrote them. Still in PDF its easy enough to copy and edit the lists out, and add in stuff you do want to use.

True enough. If you're pimping it, I'll give it another look. I think my FLGS still has a hard copy.

Not a huge fan of generic random encounter charts. I dig more specific random encounter charts for certain duchies, baronies, towns, hilly regions etc.

Well the thing is, especially as a PDF, you can copy tables that fit your setting the best, then add and delete things that make it work perfectly. So if nothing else it saves you basic work.

This is, of course, the one I use. For me, it's the closest thing I've found to the 1/e DMG. What else do you need?

I've been using the ones out of Monster Manual II. I'd rather be using official C&C sources, but haven't been able to do that. The system is just so flexible that I love being able to use some of my AD&D stuff with it.

The MoAET is broken down into terrain types.

+1

I seldom use "random" encounters, and if I do I want it to be specific to what I am running at the time.

Engineering Dungeons has separate random encounter tables for common, uncommon, and rare encounters. There are each of those tables for the following terrains:

Desert, Hot

Desert, Cold

Forest

Hills

Jungle/Swamp

Mountains

Plains

Planar

Underground

The best part is that all the monsters on those 27 tables can be found in Monsters and Treasure. My pet peeve with 3rd party enconter tables is that half the monsters aren't in M&T.

I don't have that pet peeve because I have nearly every monster book made for every edition of D&D, so I can find a version of it somewhere, usually 3 or more versions. If you don't have a good selection of MM's from other editions the "Mother of All Encounter Tables" will be of less use, unless you want a nice template with which to write up your own.

I forgot Serl put all that in Engineering Dungeons, though.
I think I better move that to my "regularly used" section of C&C books.

When I CK, I usually do it at someone else's house so I only bring what books I can carry in a single bag. So, Engineering Dungeons has been very valuable for me since M&T is usually the only monster book I have on me during play.

Thanks for the remembrance. Engineering Dungeons is useful in ways aside from simply "making dungeons." You can also use it to construct traps, as well...

The 1st edition DMG, the Fiend Folio and MMII are all good.

Based on what is available for C&C, I'll also go with the encounter charts in Engineering Dungeons. Everything you need from the M&T right there. Though, experienced CKs can easily use the charts from older editions of the D&D game as well.
