Well, please don't tease me with 4e. Some people here know how much I hate that edition...
The other day I was searching around the Internet some info about different D&D iterations of the barbarian class. As such I stumbled around some info about the 4e barbarian to come. Incredible! It was all about a weird and incomprehensible jargon extremely boring to read, but that made me realize that current D&D is no more a role-playing game. I think it has become a kind of weird fantasy chess game, where you strategically move your pieces on some mat to oppose and vanquish the DM's pieces. Story, immersion, role-playing, etc., is no more what this game is about. It's a miniature game, but of course you could roleplay with it as much as one could roleplay with a chess game after all.

Ah, okay, sorry for the rant that has nothing to do with that thread...

As for the new, 4th Crusade art and new look overall, it sort of reminds me of the latter days of 1e, when Easley art was being used. I know that is sort of a weird comparison because for C&C it's the same artist for all the printings, but I get that vibe for some reason. In any event, I like the new look and the new art (at least from what I see online, I don't own any new printings yet).

this'll make you laugh, but for a while I couldn't quite figure out what you all were going on about with 'green' covers. They look clearly Red to me.

oh well, colorblindness strikes again.

But they are red. This has been just some elaborate trick/conspiracy by everyone here to just mess with your head.

Now that we have accomplished that we can close this thread.

thanks, Sir Ironside. That's what I usually conclude when I can't find the damned numbers in all those colored dots!

My son and I spotted some of the "new look" covers in a local game shoppe so (becasue of this thread) I asked him what he thought of the covers. He rated them better than average, but not the coolest covers in the store. (He's still enamored with Games Workshop dark elves.)

I like the new and old covers, but for different reasons.

The older covers scream "old school" gaming at me. They have more of a parchment color and such. They remind me of low-to-mid level gaming.

The newer covers are nice because nobody else uses that shade of green and so they stand out more, but the figures seem more amped-up like a mid-to-high level game.

As to the red/green thing, I'm not sure if anyone is kidding about being color blind or not but I'm certain that some of the online pictures of the covers are red and others are green. Not sure which of the two I like better, but apparently green is the one in the stores.

I think the trolls were experimenting with different colours for different books, just like the title script was red for the PHB and green for M&T in the older cover styles.

In the end they went for one colour.

Pretty funny, sir!
About the colors - I wouldn't be opposed to having a different color for each book...green for M&T, red for the PHB, blue for the CKG, purple for OG&M, etc. I know, just a dream, but it would be pretty cool, IMHO.

I've been looking at all my books from 1e onward and I have to say that without a doubt the best books with the most eye popping appeal were the 1e AD&D books - not the original covers which I found to be a bit weird, no... I'm talking about the one with the Dungeon Master on the cover holding the doors open to his dungeon. The one with the Wizard on the PHB, etc... . Those were wonderful art pieces. Just my opinion!

Now this is my version of the DMG redux for C&C!

OK... so I'm just joking with the above picture. Still... I kinda wish C&C would have similar full cover gorgeous pictures, back to front. Imagine a CK standing at the entrance to his castle with Draw bridge down and a couple of adventurers with their back to us are cautiously approaching him!

I liked the look of the cover art on the Yggsburgh book (and the other proposed hardcovers in the series had some even nicer pieces in that style, although that never came to pass, obviously):

Who was the artist on those lost Castle Zagyg books? Isn't Peter's style, I figure it is someone else.

I can't remember his name but those were awesome covers. Too bad we'll never see them.

Jeffrey Jones, now Jeffrey Catherine Jones, a favorite of Franzetta's I believe, did work for Heavy Metal, but has left the industry, unless I'm mistaken.
