Captain America
Captain America
I read in the paper this morning that Captain America is coming back starting in July. His supposed 'death' two years ago is being explained as "chance to understand my place in the cosmic order of things".
Give me a break. Can't they just say he faked his death to go on an undercover mission or something? LAME.

Color me uninterested.
I jumped off the DC/Marvel bandwagon a few years back for EXACTLY that reason. Cosmic event...main character death/icapacitated...unknown starnger takes the mantle...the original hero returns...rinse and recycle ad nausem.
I only read independents and collected trades of well told runs these days.
And I occasionally buy a few just to look at a neat artists work.

I've read like 8 comics in my entire life so Im not an authority on the comic storyline thing, but this sounds like royal cheese to me if that's the way theyre bringing back the big damn hero in this series.

Re: Captain America
I think they are trying to compete with the "Death of Superman" flap. And we all know how well that went.

Does the current CA go back to being Bucky?
Does the current Batman go back to being Robin/Nightwing when DC decides to bring Bruce Wayne back (again).
I wish the bigs would put the comics on a 5 real years = 1 comic year system and stick with it.
The Golden Agers would be in their 50's/60's and have passed on their legacies or died. A few of the the big heroes could still be in their prime (Supes because he is an alien, Wonder Woman an Amazon, and so on). Make each death real and permanent...make each Big Event real and have consequences-no reboots...give the reader an incentive to invest in the characters and story.

If they did that, they could not have thirty or forty different comics based on the same character. No comics = no revenue = no comics.
Ah, but it might make them run leaner as a company and produce higher quality work.
Listen to me, I sound like Milton Friedman!!!!
Honestly tho, I think their model makes them run boom/bust as a company.
Plus, and this is really the most important factor, the inconsistancy marshes my mellow.

Sales wise? Big, in the short term. Creatively, we got a Cyborg villian, a punk Superboy, a Ray Charles-looking revenant body, and another metalsuit guy. So yeah, Epic Fail there.

I'm a huge Cap fan. In fact, he's my favorite hero. I've been reading him on and off ever since the Bloodstone Saga (gosh, probably about 20 years ago or so). I don't know what to say about this. Part of me is kind of glad, because I never got into Bucky as Cap very much...I'm reading it, but just can't seem to get into it that much. On the other hand, I feel like the last few years is one big mindf**k. So yeah, it's kind of crappy.

*chucjles* Funny enough, the punk Superboy was the only entertaining character to come out of the deal.

As far as stockholders seem to think, boom and bust looks to be their style. i.e. like any other stock, ride it while it's high and jump ship when it's low. Then appreciate the adrenaline rush as you drink out of a gold plated martini glass while mocking the "losers" who got too attached to things like customer service or "better stories."
That sort of play forces creative types to play conservative (Hello, Hollywood, we're talking to you.) So you'll only get a "family dynasty" superhero from a independent comic company.
And while I'd like that style of story would work, I read Lord Dynal's post and think about how many Star Trek fans STILL insist that the original series is the way to go. Would have Enterprise done better if it had pulled the JJ Abrams alternate timeline trick and done a total reboot?
On the other hand, I've noted the "James Bond/Dr. Who" effect, where fans seem to gloom onto the actor who introduced them to a series. Sean Conner or Roger Moore? Tom Backer or Christopher Ecclestion?

You're in luck, I saw in Previews that he will be back from the dead as well.
Again.

Good post. I think there's a lot of the "conservative" force involved with this decision. And I'm sure it all boils down to money. I think any entity (be it Hollywood, the comic industry, etc.) puts a little of themselves out there, but they make sure they have a contingency plan if the public (or media) rejects it. And this is probably what happeneed with the new Cap run. The question is, did they give it enough time?
I think it was a gutsy move with Star Trek that I think paid off in the end. I think it was a good movie. I also think that, given time, many older fans will come over and see it as a good way to reboot, or at the very least a good way to spin off an alternate timeline. And along the same vein, I actually give WotC a lot of credit for taking D&D in the direction they did. I don't care for what they did, but they had the stones to take D&D in a new direction and stick with it (so far ) despite what anyone else thought.

Eh. My last spate of comic collecting days were at the dawn of Image (then Malibu) Comics. I only pick up the odd graphic novel collection (Watchmen, Batman etc.) these days.

I find I'm turning into the grandpa from the Lost Boys who didn't need a TV because he read the TV Guide.
I read Previews each month and don't feel the need to get the comics

"I'm back I'm wet; it was all just a dream."
That s#*t has been around since the 70's, just not in comic form.
Used to collect comics from the late 70's till the mid 90's then traditional comics and I parted ways, sold my collection; via auction, for a eventual 30,000 and never looked back.
I now pick up the occasional Mad Magazine, Heavy Metal or trade paperback, but those are rare, I have more interests now.
From what I've heard from the current comic market, I am missing nothing.
