Blade Runner: The Final Director's Cut

Post by Omote »

Instead of mucking up the "Legend" thread, I'll post this here for further discussion and speculation.

Enjoy!

(sorry for the long link, I don't know how to do all that fancy schmancy html stuff).

FORGET about that version of this absolute masterpiece... Look forward to THIS:
DVDTimes wrote:
Warner Home Video have confirmed their plans for Ridley Scotts long-awaited definitive version of Blade Runner with a recently issued press release detailing plans for two separate DVD releases, one later this year and another to follow in 2007.

Warner Home Video (WHV) announced today that it has acquired worldwide rights to Ridley Scotts Blade Runner and plans two new DVD releases of the futuristic classic. Rights had lapsed a year ago, but negotiations for a long-term license have now been completed, and the film will again be available to the public.

First, a restored and remastered DVD version of the 1992 Directors Cut will debut in September in the U.S. and October in the UK for a special four-month limited release, after which it will be placed on moratorium by WHV.

Later in 2007, to celebrate the films 25th anniversary, the studio will unveil Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Scotts definitive new version of his science-fiction masterpiece. The film will be released theatrically in select major U.S. cities, followed by a multi-disc Special Edition DVD release which will also contain three alternate versions of Blade Runner: the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut, the Expanded International Theatrical Cut and the 1992 Directors Cut. Ample, ground-breaking bonus features will also be included.

In making the announcement, Jeff Baker, WHVs Senior VP and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog said: This is clearly Ridleys signature film and we are thrilled to have it back. While details of the new DVDs will be announced later, we wanted to get this great news to the many serious film buffs and ardent Blade Runner fans whove been so patient, despite besieging us with thousands of annual requests in recent years for new Blade Runner DVDs.

Continued Baker, A number of people have told me that in the start-up days of DVD, Blade Runner was absolutely the first DVD title they wanted, so much so that they purchased it even before their first DVD player! I guarantee these fans our new DVDs will be well worth waiting for.

Blade Runner -- starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos and Daryl Hannah -- made its first appearance in U.S. theaters on June 25, 1982, dazzling audiences with its stylish, brooding look into the future. From its intelligent, provocative story line to its stunning camera work and state-of-the art special effects, Blade Runner opened the door to a new view of tomorrow.

Set in a multi-ethnic, overcrowded, high-tech city of the future, Blade Runner was also a benchmark in production design and helped propel the cyberpunk look into mainstream American consciousness.

Now THAT'S the DVD set of BR I'm looking forward too!!! 8) Of course this was annouced by Warner Brothers about 5 months ago. Nothing big has been stated on this in almost that same amount of time. If you do some digging, you can find that there are ate least 2 independent DVD studio's who claim to be doing work on the restoration of the Ultimate Blader Runner DVD set.

I can't find the link any more, but one of these DVD studios did mention that Warner Bros. stated to them that the NEW Blade Runner DVD would be a "true" limited edition, and around the $40.00US mark.

There is just one question I would like answered:

Where can I find a quality DVD version of the original EDITOR's cut of Blade Runner. That is, complete with gumshoe voiceover and happy ending.

My VHS copy won't last forever, and I think the editor of that film has been cruelly denied his praise.

I agree. The whole voice over bit might seem like too much camp for some, but it gave it a noir detective vibe I still dig.

Not going to happen, at least as far as I know.

I *think* the original version was released on DVD late 1996 or so, but in very low numbers (or this could have been a remastered VHS). Then in the frist QTR of 1997 the Director's Cut was released on DVD and has been the standard ever since.

Ridley Scott has stated that it was not his decision to do the voiceover work, but came from the studio.

I'll buy this for sure. But I'm a sucker for Sci-Fi and almost all versions and DVD releases.

Say, pretty soon (9/12) another version of Star Wars - original theatrical release will be available!!!
Hehe, I have that one on Beta, VHS, VHS remastered, and DVD. 8)

And THAT'S why there are so many different releases of genre films. The companies know the fans and know they will buy yet another version of the same film.

Classic examples (on DVD) are:

Evil Dead ~ 12 versions on DVD.

Underworld ~ 5 versions on DVD.

There are probably oodles more of movies that have been released like this.
