Michael Jackson is gone.
Michael Jackson is gone.
Thats right MJ passed away today. Two famous people in one day.
I will never forget the first time I saw Thriller, and I will never forget the first time I saw Captain EO at DisneyWorld as a child. Whatever that people might say about him while he was white, his accomplishments while black will be in the annals of history along with Elvis and the Beatles.

Agreed. Truly is a sad day for anyone who loves music and dance. The way he revolutionized the music world will likely never be matched. RIP MJ.

That is seriously f'd up! Dang, this is terrible news. I certainly was not in love with the direction he was taking these past few years, but that doesn't make his contributions to the music industry any less important. RIP MJ.

It's been a strange 3 days for those of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s. I haven't really watched late night TV since Carson went off the air. Losing Ed McMahon on Tuesday was tough. Just hearing and reading his recollections of Johnny, as well as watching the best of DVDs from when the Tonight Show was fun has been a hoot. Then getting out of work today to the news of Farrah Fawcett. I noticed her at that magical point in my life when girls still had cooties. Wow. Smoking hot. Then the cancer of the last 3 years. She went out with her boots on, if anybody did. Then getting home and hearing that Jackson was taken to the hospital (sorry...being from the Chicago area, MJ will always refer to #23) was a stunner. My biggest memories of him, honestly, were of getting tired of his music because it was being so ridiculously overplayed. But seeing those videos for the first time, at a time when the video was still an art form, was pure magic. While they might not have been the same thing as seeing The Beatles for the first time on Ed Sullivan, or watching Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon (I'm too young for that), it was still pretty big for my day. There were some awesome videos in the day (anything Van Halen, Dire Straits' Money for Nothing, Headbanger's Ball etc.), but none of them could carry Michael Jackson's luggage. Makes a guy feel a little bit older, without necessarily getting any wiser. Fare thee well, muse. You did well.

I think I know the real reason people have mid life crisis in their 40's. All their childhood and early adult memory makers seem to start dying left and right.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Ding ding ding....
The weirdly nostalgic mood I find myself in had me browsing through the web and virtual earth exploring a summer camp I went to in the late 70's and early 80's.....
Oh and I turn four-oh in one month....

Farrah dies. Like Sir Osis of Liver said above, that poster of her made me realize that, "Hey, maybe girls aren't so bad. As a matter of fact, I kinda like girls!" Now she is dead, Of anal cancer no less...
Mike dies. I remember "Thriller" (the album). There wasn't a bad song on there. Everyone had that album back in '83. I think they mailed a copy to you if you didn't have one. "Billie Jean" is STILL an awesome song. Man, sad to see him go. Of a heart attack. At 50.

I remeber watching the Mowtown reunion special where MJ did the Moonwalk for the first time. The crowd went ballistic. I remember looking at the TV sideways and asking"How in the #*(%$ did he just do that?"
Ditto for the "Annie are you walking" video where he leaned over at a 45 degree angle to the floor without falling.
My favorite video of all time has to be "Do you remember the time?" Where Eddie Murphy played the Pharaoh and MJ was his court magician. That was a cool video.

Eddie rules.
Taking a Motown feel and adding an amped up beat to it gave pop music some great things. Problem is, very few in the pop world have figured out anything beyond it. You listen to a lot of the modern/post-modern pop stars, and a lot of them still have that same kind of feel.
Maybe that's why I still appreciate the metal side of things. The bands I like (all the big British bands, Gamma Ray, Helloween, Edguy, Hammerfall, Dream Theater etc.) all have distinctive sounds. Whether it's unique rhythms, remarkable lead singers, the drummer, whatever. You hear "that beat" and you don't have to hear Bruce Dickinson's voice. Even if you never heard it before, you know that it's an Iron Maiden tune.
Jackson did that for pop music in the early 80s. He carved his own niche. Problem was, everybody else moved into that niche when they saw it worked, and after they analyzed it a little bit, found out how to do it better. Unfortunately, I don't think people moved beyond that in what is the current pop setting. The Seattle bands came close, but they faded out and we're now stuck with what we have.
Long live Eddie.

Back to the Iron Maiden thing (what can I say? I've got a one-track mind), they said it best when they proclaimed, "Nobody cares 'til somebody famous dies."
As long as that track wasn't built by the DC Metro train system, I think you're in good shape.
