Oddly enough, Relaxo, that reminds me of a book I recently found at a used-book store:

Hmm... I wonder if it's just a revamped and retitled version of his earlier book titled Fantasy Wargaming: Games With Magic & Monsters. If so, I do recommend it. Hackett's writing is decent enough... I've recently gave mine another read through a year or so ago. I got it visiting in the UK back around '92.

I've been mulling over getting Fantasy Wargaming for ages, and have never pulled the trigger on it.

Relaxo - it that a game system? The description makes it sound so. If so, would you mind giving a review?

too early for a review only skimmed so far

there is a game system in the back, I had thought it was more of an encyclopedia of RPGs.

more to follow....

Ok I feel dumb, this actually IS a FRPG and Tabletop wargame in one book.

I guess I'm used to seeing a big splashy title on the front of such books.

I had thought it was another book entirely when I bought it, but hey, still cool and cheap, and a chapter w/ good advice about painting minis.

Wow! I had that book (Fantasy Wargaming) once upon a time. God knows where it is now... probably long gone.

When I think of "Fantasy Wargaming" the book that comes to my head is the one called Fantasy Wargaming: The Highest Level of All, compiled and edited by Bruce Galloway which is a RPG of sorts.

As do I, serl. That's why I'm curious as to what the differences are between the two.

Oh, dear God! I have a copy of this. Its...odd. Its hard for me to really get a grasp on it. Some of the ideas on magic are kind of cool. The rest is a bit hard to understand. I break it out every now and again and give it a flip-through.

Honestly, I wish I knew a bit more about it. How it came to be, if anyone ever actually played it, etc. It looks like more of a tabletop wargame with some essays about fantasy campaign design than a true, complete RPG in the modern sense of the word.

But, hey, it is the HIGHEST LEVEL OF ALL! Maybe I'm not yet experienced enough to understand it.
