A dilemma...

Post by Steerpike »

I've just recently discovered Castles and Crusades, and I am quite pleased with what I've seen. I've been playing D&D since 1e AD&D, and 3.5 started to wear on me a bit. I'm looking at Pathfinder as an alternative, and while it seems pretty good it still isn't exactly what I'm looking for. 4e is out of the question.

C&C looks like just the thing.

Only I see that a 4th printing of the Player's Handbook is coming out soon. Do I wait for that? How soon will it be here? Or should I simply give way to my impatience and buy the 3rd printing so I can start playing?

The prices are so good I may just buy the 3rd and then the 4th when it comes out. Any suggestions from the forums? If the 4th printing comes out two days after I buy the 3rd I'll feel like an idiot.

The 4th print will have some major revisions to the barbarian class, additional spells for illusionists, and other information. It will be going up slightly in cost actually, 24.95 I believe.

From what we are given to understand, this puppy has gone to the printers and is imminent (pre-orders are open on it), so unless something has gone drastically wrong with it my advice is to just pre-order or wait the coupla weeks or so on 4th print....

Ah...great news. Thank you!

$24.95 is still a great price compared to much of what is out there, and I really like what I've seen from the C&C rules thus far. Thanks for the information.

I'll wait for it

It should be available after Gen Con. Soft cover copies are supposed to be available at Troll Con this week.

I would wait.

Thanks. Great news.

Well I just bought the 3rd printing PDF for $9.99 and I'm going to introduce my group to the game this weekend. I'll get the print version of the 4th printing, and hopefully my group will be enthusiastic and get their stuff as well.

Thanks, guys. Looks like a great system and I am looking forward to it!

Welcome! Just remember that the default answer is "YES!" in C&C. Yes, you can try that, make a siege check.... Many systems seem to have the default answer of "NO, unless...". No, unless you have that feat/trait/skill, you cannot try that. In C&C, your PCs are always one SIEGE roll away from a heroic act

Thanks Breakdaddy. I will keep that in mind. The C&C philosophy looks like just the thing for me. I find 3.5e got too unwieldy, and like you said there was too much 'No, unless..." The mechanics at some point get in the way of the game. Tried some 4e games and let me just say I was not favorably disposed to it at the end of the day.

So I came across C&C and thought, "Yes, this is what I've been looking for." I'm eager to put the system to the test and see how it plays out at the gaming table .

Like BD says, the SIEGE engine replaces all of the feats, if you wish it too. Generally, I use the HD of opponents as the default CL for any "feat like actions". When it comes to spells, I generally use 3+spell level for any meta magic CL's. Still, for things like changing energy types, the CL is simply spell levels in my games.

You know... I always like hearing these kind of things when a gamer comes to discover the game. On the one hand, for many it is the game they already know how to play but on the other, the little differences it holds often is a breath of fresh air compared to some of the other systems that are around.

Weclome to the great 4th Crusade (as in 4th printing of the PHB), Steerpike! May the serfs of your fief fall under the spell of the Castles & Crusades rules.

Glad to hear it! Like Tree and the other guys that run games here, I like to encourage players to think, imagine, and try anything their characters could reasonably accomplish in the game. The more heroic and improbable the higher the challenge level of the check. But with a little encouragement and good flavor/description on both sides of the screen, these moments can become magical.

Well said, I need to impress this upon my players.

Welcome to the Crusades Steerpike.

I am a former 3.5er myself, who has found C&C to be a much better match to the type of play I want to invoke.

The hardest part about changing over to C&C, was getting my players to "unlearn" what they had been used to in 3.0/3.5. Once that was done, they grew to love C&C.

I ordered the third printing and found out the next day that a fourth printing was coming out. Luckily, I didn't have the money to also order M&T, so I wound up getting the current print. Anyways, welcome to the Crusade, Steerpike!

What part of Missouri are you in, Steerpike? There are a lot of us Show-Me Staters in these forums come to think of it.

Edit: I'm in KC area.
