Adventure Ideas, list yours here

Post by Breakdaddy »

I thought I'd start a collection of Adventure ideas in hopes that the community here would add to this. My hopes are to assist the harried CK when an impromptu game is imminent and time is a factor. The following is just a seed, to be extrapolated upon by the creative CK:

An ancient Methuselah Tree has awakened after its millenia-long sleep in the depths of the forest. Unfortunately, the elder guardian spirit that gives the tree sentience appears to have gone insane. The local druids have been slain by the tree or have fled before its wrath. Other creatures of the forest have begun a mass exodus and it's taking a terrible toll on the ecosystem. To make matters worse, the town of Glennhollow lies in the path of destruction being wrought by the spirit. Glennhollow has activated the militia, their intent to divert or destroy the tree at any cost. Unfortunately, the tree has driven some of the darker denizens of the forest before it, things that threaten to end Glennhollow's existence before the tree ever sets root upon the town.

The adventurers are in a small frontier village (perhaps fortified with a simple palisade) when suddenly, a noble lady escorted by a single bodyguard rides into town with hostile humanoids (pick what suits your world) hot on their heels. After the adventurers and townsfolk deal with the raiders, they learn that the lady and her guard are the sole survivors of a caravan that was ambushed by the humanoids, of which the group just slain was a detachment. She offers the adventurers a reward to recover certain items of hers, which naturally the raiders have taken back to their lair, along with the other spoils of the caravan (the prospect of salvaging these could provide inducements as well).

Complication: all is as described, but what the lady neglects to tell the adventurers is that the items in question are magical relics she requires to conduct a ritual.

Further complication: These are actually sacred relics of the humanoid tribe, and she (or prior dupes working for her) stole these from the humanoids earlier; the raiders were actually on a mission to recover them!

Very nice CKDad
I would like to also suggest that some of your favorite video games or books, even non fantasy, could make nice little adventures. Let's look at a personal favorite of mine, the first Half-Life:

An enclave of powerful magi have taken over Adunrakk, an ancient and all but forgotten Dwarfhold deep in the mountains. There they have practised dangerous and forbidden magicks in an attempt to open portals to new dimensions and worlds in an effort to expand the influence of their guild beyond this plane. Unfortunately, the magick has become unstable and a huge portal, thought contained, has unleashed a wave of deadly energy killing many of the most prominent mages. With their deaths, the enclave loses the power to contain the warped creatures that begin to pour forth from the maw of the mighty portal in staggering numbers. Many of the mercenary guards that the enclave hired to maintain order have perished at the hands of the horrors leaving only a handful to attempt to contain them. Even more disquieting is the rumor that has begun circulating amongst the ragged survivors that the sole known entrance to Adunrakk has collapsed under the immense weight of an avalanche.

The adventurers head back to town after a long and profitable dungeon delve. The shopkeepers and Barmaids are happy to see them and even the town guard cheers the groups arrival.

All is not right in Bingum though, for the group unknowingly carries the Anchient Kings cursed treasure with them. The Ancient King with his Shadow Knights are not far behind!

The pass through the mountains proved more unrealiable than first thought as the coming of a early winter has trapped you in the pass until the spring thaw. Luckily you found the warm and friendly Two Peak Inn well stocked and more than happy to have you for the winter. All seemed well until the first murders.

Now you have to figure out who can be trusted, who is telling the truth and who is killing off the People of Two Peaks one by one.

A small fishing village that the PC's have visited before has disappeared. The buildings are still there but no one is around. The PC's find food laid out to eat, tools still lying around and signs that the villagers just dropped what they were doing and left. The only things that are out of place are runes scrawled on a barn wall that are undecipherable and a child's drawing of a man with webbed hands and feet.

The PCs meet a man who claims the people of his village are not who they appear to be. Sure, they look the same and sound the same, but there's something wrong that the man can't quite put his finger on. The trouble began shortly after a "hundred stars fell from the sky." The man pleads with the party to investigate the matter.

(Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The Ravenloft Monstrous Compendium had stats for a Doppelganger Plant and "podlings" as they called them that would work very well for this.)

Some nice ideas! AGNKim, I'll let you be barney the security guard. Not slim barney from HL2, but goofy fatboy barney from the first HL
PS- McBain will be Dongor Meefran, epic fighter. This is the only way I could talk him into playing. He gets a crowbar of disruption.

Traveling through a large city the PC's get lost and find themselves in a section dating back to the time of the founding of the city. All the people there dress and speak as they did when they did hundreds of years ago and have no concept of the city changing around them. They believe anything beyond their area is wilderness.

I ran a game once, that lasted the space of an evening, that revolved entirely around a card game.

Although, it wasn't just the unscrupulous npc's trying to do each other, and the players in, and not just at cards. It was the fact that they were playing with a deck of many things.

A thick carpet of fog has recently begun to permeate the local woodlands outside of the village of Brynson Baine. The fog seemingly came out of nowhere and within weeks the entire surrounding forest was blanketed in the grey soupy mist. Now tales have begun to circulate that large tufts of humanoid shaped vapors have become dislodged from the fog and seemingly have attempted to communicate with locals, apparently beeseching them come closer, but to no avail. The locals are frightened and run at the mere sight of the wispy creatures. Are the creatures hostile or friendly? If not hostile, what is it that they want? These answers and more await the stalwart band of heroes that has the fortitude to enter the shady mists of the Brynwood.

For those who played Oblivion, I can honestly say that I had this idea years before that game came out, but that's my word againt theirs.
There's one merchant in town, and he seriously undercuts all other merchants in town. His selection isn't terrific, but what he does sell is a steal compared to other stores in towne. It comes to light that the merchant is graverobbing and selling wares off of those corpses he steals from.

The kingdom has recently repelled a vicious invasion by organized rebels from an adjacent country, whose leader has a claim to the throne. The heroes, while resting in the capital of Sarantia, are called before the Regent, Trospero, who has some dire news. The king has been kidnapped by vile sorcery during the attack.

A party was sent after the invaders, but only one made it back, with information about a powerful magical stone, the Heart of Tiamat, that has the power to defeat the vile sorcerer who stole the king. The characters must find the stone and use it to face the necromancer, then free the king.

While eating a meal at the local Inn the party is alarmed at the sight of a man staggering through the doorway with a dagger in his back before dropping to the floor dead.. Pinned to his back is a note with the the party leaders name on it.

The note reads" Fear not for this evil and foolish man as he goes on to meet his just reward. You must hurry to the Town of Two Rivers at once and make ready to defend the town. EVERYTHING depends on it. Do not let the town fall or it will mark the beginning of the end and everything you hold dear will die and fade away within ten years. Give your lives if you must for Two Rivers must not fall!! I have found a way to come back and warn you but only once. ?Do not fail!

The note is signed by the very party leader now reading it and he and others should recognize his own handwritting.

Wizards and astrologers gather for the coming of a comet that only appears once in 500 years. When the comet appears it is different in color than it was recorded to be at its last appearance. Furthermore the comet yields a more frightening result, the appearance of a new moon that no one ever knew existed.

I love things like this. Perhaps when we get enough we can turn it into a free PDF for either the TLG site or the society site.

The village of Waterhaven has had many strange events over the years. Locals just pay them no mind and never questioned the oddities. That is until a minor earthquake struck that caused the magistrates mansion to burn down. While clearing the ruins an unknown door is found in what was the cellar. The door has a strange sigil on it with markings that date back to an empire that existed a thousand years ago.

The younger brother of one of the pc's who is known for getting into trouble and being a troubled youth has finally made good. He is now a pawnbroker in a big city and his shop has done very well. When the pc's come back to town the brother meets with them along with the brothers new and pretty girlfriend and soon to be wife and offers them a special deal on any salvage and treasure they might have. He also shows off his shop and talks about a little bit of trouble he has.

It seems that thives have targeted his shop(there have been two attempts to break in so far) and now his buisness calls for him to leave the shop for a few days. He asks his brother and friends if they might guard his shop while staying in the loft over the place while he is gone and even offers to throw in 60GP.

What is really going on- The younger brother really did make good. Because of the high rent though he also agreed to join the thieves guild and is involved in holding and moving Ill gotten goods for them. When he meet his new girlfriend who is the daughter of a Noble he had to spend a large amount of gold to impress her. Gold the brother did not have! He used the thieves guild funds instead and figured on replaceing the funds before the guild ever found out. To do that he needs to travel to another town and sell off a few iteams that he had stored away for a rainy day as well as sell some of the new goods he has purchased(some of those goods he isn't supposed to sell yet as the time has not passed yet for the real owners to have a chance to buy them back).

If the pc's agree to watch his shop for him he soons leaves along with his girlfriend and all goes smoth for the pc's for the first few days. Then the thieves guild gets word that the brother has skipped out of town and they come looking for him(and there Loot) at the shop. They barge into the shop and demand there money and generaly toss the place looking for it. If the pc's fight them they will retreat but soon will return with the might of the thieves guild behind them. Also two of the sellers return tot he shop demanding there goods back and with the gold to buy them back. The goods are not there though as the brother has taken them to sell.

One of the persons is a Noble and has two men at arms with him. When he is denied his good he has his guards attack the pc's(to subdue) and if he is threatened he wil retreat but the party will soon find more and more trouble for them as the Noble uses his influence to have the party name trashed and have thugs and Duelists hound them.

The other man who needs his goods back is a priest of a LG diety and when the party tells him his goods are no longer there the man gets angry and thinks the pc's are out to cheat him. He will return with a Paladin and seek to gain his goods by any lawful means.(his goods is a small statue of his Diety with slight magical powers to heal the sick and wounded. The priest needed funds for a new program to feed and train the poor so sold it to the pc's brother only on the condition he could buy it back within two weeks at a 100% markup. The priest then gained the money to buy it back.

The PC's are in for a lot of trouble and should have a rough time of it. The brother and his girlfriend never return because they have run into trouble on the way back from selling the goods. I will post more on that trouble soon
PS- This idea for a adventure is based very loosely on one by Gary Gygax! As always Gary is the BEST man to steal awsome ideas for adventures from and or expand on! I miss you Gary!!!

Whilst wandering the countryside in search of adventure, the characters happen upon the small town of Lichfield. Aside from the unfortunate name, Lichfield appears to be a nice, quiet little community of quaint cottages, small farms, and a sizable cathedral surrounding a two story Inn. The PCs notice how well kept the gardens and farms are as they make their way to the center of town. They soon begin to see that, though it is midday on a sunny summer afternoon, there appears to be no living being in the town. Eerie silence accompanies the party as they continue their silent march towards the inn. Livestock and people are conspicuously absent from the area, and as they pass a modest stable they note the scents that normally occupy such places when animals are present, but no sign of the animals themselves. The lush gardens that surround the inn are in good condition and obviously have been looked after rather recently. The party notices jagged holes that appear to have erupted from beneath the earth interspersed throughout the town. The holes are roughly elliptical and about 4' or so across at their widest point. The church has been barred from the inside but once the party gains entrance they will see many signs that people were here recently, but no broken windows or other exits are apparent. The also find no sign of the jagged holes that litter the town within the church itself...
