The Color of DVDs

Post by CharlieRock »

Terry Prathcet's The Color of Magic was released on dvd last week. I just got it. It is actually an adaptation of two books; The Color of Magic and The Light Fantastic.

They got Samwise (LoTR) to play Twoflower.

I got a copy of that last year (must've been released earlier this side of the pond), and I can heartily recommend it. David Jason is pushing his age as Rincewind; Rincewind can't be older than forty-odd at that point, but David's wanted that role since he first read the book, so it was nice of them to give it to him. Besides, he turns in a great performance. The people who did this adaptation (and Hogfather, for that matter), are now working on Going Postal.

Going Postal's not my favourite of Terry's works, by a long shot. I always got the feeling that he wants us to like Moist a lot more than we actually can. I think it would've been a better idea to keep on rollin' with the books as they came. Equal Rites is a great book, though it tends to get overshadowed by the dazzling trio of Mort, Sourcery and of course Wyrd Sisters, which remains one of my favourites to this day.

Mind you, reading Mort was quite an interesting experience for me. I was just getting to the climax of the book when we had a ruddy earthquake! I was almost pitched from my chair.

They made two animated movies, Wyrd Sisters, and Soul Music. The animation is old school (think Random House's The Hobbit) but otherwise okay and very close to the material.

They did release the DVD earlier for UK. You guys get a lot of stuff released there faster then here. Same with Japan.

I have it and it was an awesome movie. I don't think I could have done a better Discworld movie. I dropped out of reading the books when Prachett shifted the focus to the city watch and we didn't see Rincewind or even Death for some time.

Ah yes, the old Cosgrove Hall ones from about ten years or so ago. I have those. It always amused me that Annette Crosbie starts off playing Galadriel and ends up as Granny Weatherwax!
