Always saddening to see people selling these, and if I had the money and need, I would be interested in purchasing as I feel this masterpiece of Gary and Jeff should be used, not handed back and forth between people looking to make some money (not that you are, though I know others who are.) I wish you luck in finding a buyer... it should not be that hard. Maybe go advertise it on The Acaeum in their Classifieds? Might get more people with deeper pockets interested.

I've seen some buy it now's for approximately that range. As far as I could tell, nobody's buying. I have one copy, and would love to do a low res. scan to preserve it for home use. Great care would have to be taken as not to whiten the spines. I guess it's the comic book guy in me. To do it, or not to do it. That's the question. It's not like I'm going to sell my copy anyway.

I'm not sure if it'll ever top much over $250 though. I suppose there is always the exception but even then. It's a great set and I'm glad I have one. I also wish I could have afforded another back when they were still technically affordable.
I mean, if I didn't have the box set, I wouldn't be prepared to spend much more than $100 for it but that's just me. I've spent more than $100 on a few rare books in my time. Maybe if I didn't tie up so much of my spending on other gaming materials on a yearly basis, I'd be prepared to spend more...
I don't know.
I guess it's more things to reflect upon.

Maybe someday it'll be a steal, but as much as I adore this I don't think it's fetching this much money. It skyrocketed, and everybody and their grandma started offloading them. Good luck, though!

Well, he sold the non mint copy. No, not to me. I have two copies, and won't be buying a third unless I find a much cheaper price.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

25-50 years from now, I doubt it will be worth much, despite the limited number in circulation (and the likely much smaller number that will be in circulation then). The people who are collectors of old school RPG materials are a small demographic and I don't think significant numbers of new collectors are coming down the pike. There are very few people under age 30 who would care about getting a collectible copy now, much less in 25 years. (Some) old school material is expensive now only because there is a small, but dedicated group of aging guys who want it. Once they have their copies or die, there won't be a market anymore.

Buttmonkey, I'm forced to agree with you. Don't get me wrong, old comic books(Batman, Spiderman, X-Men, etc.) might still hold some value in the decades to come. Even if younger generations have no clue who Stan Lee is, or Bob Kane, but many things will have to level off, go down in price, or whatever. I'm sure people still try to sell(for example)the Bionic Man figure MIB for a load, but who's going to buy that item in the year 2040 when I'm 70 years old? Better yet, let's say 2050-2070(I might even be dead by then). Using the Bionic example, I was born in 1970, that tv show probably debuted in 1974?, so I was a younger 1st run/early reruns fan. Tell me how many people who were born much later than the late 70's(if even that) watched that program, played with the toys, or even know who Lee Majors is? Admittedly, there will be sellers who will always look to what the priceguide folks say, but the market, or lack of, will decide how much an Oscar Goldman figure sells for. If you don't know who Oscar Goldman is, you're too young, and I'm too old. That's my overly-long explanation to agree about waning interest and market prices.
I don't know, collectors are pretty crazy at times. I think they are crazy right now to consider paying $200 for Upper Levels. I think they are crazy to pay as much as they do for Rules Cyclopedias, original boxed sets, etc...

Agreed. My point is I think the number of crazy RPG collectors is going to diminish. The bulk of the people who are going to care about old-school material are going to be people who were around during the old school and maybe some folks from the next generation. I have a hard time believing there will be many replacements when our generation dies out.

Collecting is odd, that's for sure. I once had many, many things but sold them in a bout of stupidity. I want it all back (hey, gotta keep myself busy) but I'm not mortgaging the house to do so. But the old adage is definitely alive and kicking when it comes to RPG collecting - the item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Sometimes that smarts.
