Asking the experts?

Post by AslanC »

So I am watching Willow... and I am looking at Sorscha's helmet and I am dying to know what kind of helmet it is... like does it have a particular name for it's style?

I figure this place must have some helmet experts lurking about.

Any ideas?

Other than being really ugly, I'd agree that it looks like Hollywimagination. Though I think the inspiration comes from ancient Mongolia.

Just a guess.

The ridges on the helm, I think, are supposed to be used to break swords or at least add another level of protection against sword hits to the head. This comes from the real world helmets that have the ridges upon them like so. Can't remember where I heard that, probably history channel.

It is a stylized representation of a Yuan-era Mongolian helmet. In C&C terms, it would be similar to a War Hat.

Thank you sir ... now I have a solid frame of reference for what culture and era developed that sort of look.

Wouldn't look right on Vikings, but might on Kurgoshi raiders
Looks like Mongolia for the win!

I've heard similar analysis of ridged helmets, the thin line of metal is strong from the width-edge (meaning a downward chop) so it would keep a sword out of your skull and maybe break the blade.

I bet you'd still get your bell rung, though.

I haven't seen Willow since it came out... how's it stand the Test of Time?

Ridges also allow you to bash your opponent, either in unprotected places like the face, or possibly to break shields and the like, if they have them.

Surprisingly good... I mean there are moments where it looks really 80s' but that's okay.

Sort of like Krull! That's a great movie too!

I am taking the idea of the castle relocating every dawn and using it for the Tower of the Lich King in my game
Not sure if there is anything I will take from Willow... other than the idea of an evil queen... oh poor Pendria... how far you will fall.

I've always liked that helm, too, Asian. The helm has a definite Mongol feel to it.And I agree, Willow has held up suprisingly well over the years. I feel there are some great ideas in that movie.

It is what it is, but it's fine for that. It's an 80s fantasy flick with a decent budget, actors who can act, a nice score and dialogue that verges on the ropey but, honestly, a fine flick.

The only really odd note for me is Joanne Walley's sudden and complete defection, just because some stoned transvestite blunders into her tent and spouts bad poetry. That's the danger of a sheltered upbringing for you, I suppose.

The tranny did more than spout poetry... they call it the Bond effect. No matter how evil or dangerous a woman is, once you've bedded her properly, she's a force for good... just need a release, you know. Realistic? Sometimes. Funny? Always.

Never underestimate the female capacity for stupidity in the face of scruffy bad boys.

And if her mom was a domineering ... uh... witch... all the more so
