Alright You Canadians

Post by DangerDwarf »

OKay,

Beowulf & Grendel, with Gerard Butler, is one of the few movies I have been anticipating for quite some time now. After doing some preliminary looking to see how come I haven't seen trailers for it yet, it appears you Canadians have been hording the movie for yourselves.

Looks like I'll be able to pick it up on DVD later this month but I'm curious if anyone has seen this up there in the Great White North and what their thoughts on it were.

I got it on order from Amazon US.

the reviews range wildly on this flick from amazing, to weird, to complete garbage. Unfortunately since this flick wasn't imported the the US even for a limited release in theaters, I'm going to have to think that it's not "on the level."

The resounding review for Beowulf & Grendel is that the scenery, cinematography and set design is breathtaking and that the cast is quite good, especially Stellen Skarsgard.

Yeah, the fact that it was never released here makes me wonder somewhat as well. From all reports though, didn't it do well at the box office in Canada?

Ah well, I might just have to order and risk wasting my money.

Beowulf & Grendel was and indie flick even in Canada. The box office opening for B&G in Canada was $103,000 CA. For this you can guess the film probably brought in less then $1,000,000 CA. I'm not sure what the budget was for this flick, but it wasn't much for sure. B&G total box office run in the US was about $65,000 US.

Honestly the reports that came out pretty much solidified the fact that the only people who saw this flick were Gerard Butler fans.

I'm still holding out hope that it is a good movie and people just aren't interested in "beowulf" flicks.

I can hope at least.

Have you seen the versions with Cristoph Lambert? Interesting, but not that greatest ever.

The reviews on amazon range from 'garbage, why did I waste my money' to 'best movie I ever saw'. Some of the negative comments are damning, though. One guy said sometimes an extra would start bleeding before the sword blow landed, fake plastic body parts were obvious, one actress stumbled in a scene and it wasn't edited out (unintential?) and other such stuff that make it sound low budget bad. Maybe he just wanted to hate it so much he was looking for flaws to blow out of proportion. I will rent it on Netflix, for sure, but I don't think I will order it sight unseen. Too many red flags.

The Christopher Lambert 'Beowulf', the one where it was set post-apocalypse? That one is in my 'almost good' file. Just a little more editing, and I had a feeling a lot of the movie wound up on the cutting room floor anyway...

I never seen the one with Lambert, the post apocalyptic thing kept me away.

Hah! I knew this thread lay dead and stinking in here somewhere.

Finally picked up this movie the other day, just got done watching it.

Loved it.

I like their take on the story, and given everything. Not a bad job at all.

My only complaint about the DVD is it does not have subtitles. I'm hard of hearing and sometimes like to have subtitles so I dont miss any of the dialogue.

I saw B&G a few months ago and I also loved it. The costume, the scenery and Gerard Butler made the movie for me.. That's why when I first saw the preview for 300, I almost "XXX" in my pants.

I now own it on Dvd and ... umm.. avi..

Just so happens a bud today tells me his cousins hubby sent the movie to him as a gift, I tell him let's watch it. About an hour later we watch the movie and...I can safely say it was not the worse movie I have seen BUT I would be hard pressed to remember any worse.

This movie was so bad we spent lunch trying to figure out what we could mail back to his cousins husband to get even with him. Take heed don't waste your time watching this movie...seriously.

Barbwire

All of the Batman movies after the 1st (ok, I wont include Batman Begins)

Revenge of the Sith (actually, throw all 3 of the "first" episodes in)

Brothers Grimm

The D&D movie

Highlander 2

The Crow 2

Those are just off the top of my head. Gimme a minute and it'll grow.

I would rather watch all of the Batmans, RoS and Brothers Grimm in a marathon than be forced to watch BandG again.

God no.. kill me right now but not that!

Simple case of different taste in movies. For one I really enjoyed B&G.. not the movie of the year, but certainly VERY entertaining!

Wow. What did you hate so much?

I thought B&G was awesome. They really captured the environment and the times.

Was it too much like a play for you, maybe?

Not enough "oooohhhh" moments of stuff blowing up?
