The World of Aeran: Renamed Mapping

Post by AslanC »

So having actual French and German names in my world was distracting and made it feel just a little too much like Earth instead of Aeran.

So here is the renamed map.

Do the new names work?

Does it invoke a more fantasy feel?

Did you prefer the actual French and German names instead?

Original map here for comparisons.

To be honest, I rarely care what a map has on it for names, since I will likely change them anyway. Sometimes, though, I'll see a name I like, and then I'll steal that for something else... like calling a mountain pass what a river was named elsewhere.

But, as you know now, I personally prefer names that are puns, or make fun of itself. So, I'd have to go, here, with liking the French / German ones better... it has more possible humor. And, there is usually nothing wrong with "alternate earth."

I like the new names. It does have more of a fantasy feel.

Btw, does a league equal 3 miles in your world?

serleran: I see what you mean. That's sort of where I was. For example though, in Benaccio there is a town called Ardeepi. Now Benaccio is basically post Roman Italy, and in Montreal there is a neightbourhood called Rivere-des-Prairies. It is locally known as RDP and is home to many many Italians.

Hence Ardeepi
garydee: Thanks I think the fantasy naming does allow me to keep the Germanic/French feel without forcing me to be exact. It is growing on me.

And yes, 3 miles to a league, so about 1500 miles from mountain to shore if I don't miss my guess.

I like it... and the new names do give it a more "fantasy" feel. Very nice!

I think I liked the old naming myself. Seemed more distinctive IMO.

Well after great debate I decided to go with the renamed map.
Here it is with the final bit of the northern part added back in as the artist felt it wasn't complete without it.

I like the renamed map, Aslan. The names do have a much more fantasy feel to them.

As an aside, how did you make the actual map? It is quite nice.

Thanks and it is a combination of Photoshop and some Texture program that my partner-in-crime uses.
Did you notice a town name on the northern shores of Tengle Bay?

Welcome.

And of course this means in the town of Port Dynel there is a "Lord Dynel".

LOL!

On this one I can only take credit for concept, coastline and labeling. The actual terrain and texture and the rest was done by my creative partner Coyotemax. He does work that even I couldn't dream of approaching.

Between the two of us we make an awesome team though and everything is worked out by back and forth over MSN or PMs at the Cartographers Guild.
