Troll Lord Games

So I love the term Halfling as an insult to Hobbits, but as Tolkien Enterprises won't let anyone use that name, should I ever publish I want a better name for them.

Nelwyns by Lucas was too fancy or something and I know someone out there used Bobbits (pre John Wayne Bobbit I am sure) and that just seems lazy to me.

So I turn to the creative folks I know.

Any ideas?

Well, take the world you created, then give them the name of the area they hail from. Not unlike people from the U.S. are called Americans, Canada they are Canadians, U.K. the British or the Brits, Australia are called Aussies... I'm sure you get the idea.

I know TSR uses this term for them in the Gazetteer series of Mystara books, but I have always been partial to Hin.

Is there a specific melisma sought for a defined milieu? If so, start with words of the real world that have the appropriate sense, and then modify them... for example, if you want a small sounding French word, you might begin with petite, and then slightly alter it, to get petty, or pet. Heh. Bad example, but the idea is the concern.

Going a lil bit from what Serl said... Pars meaning part... homo meaning man (quiet in the peanut gallery! ) Gives you Parshomo meaning half-man. A shortened version might be Parsho singular, Parshi plural.

That's what I am trying to find a word that is English (as in British) sensible and not too over produced.

All I got is Bobbin which is a pet name for a child.

I love that line. We've used "peck" as an insult in every campaign since that movie. (Not bad for a line said by some random, soldier).

So from this could come a bastardized Magdi.

Or Dimag (don't thing you want Dimagnit :} )

Using homo for man again you

could also get a shortened Homodim, plural Homodimi...further shortening this could come Homodi or Homdi

using pars again...

you could get Magpars or Parmagnit or even Parma. plural Parmai.

Bobbin seems great to me. It has a real world reference that will instantly give folks a mental image. Assuming there is no Britain in your campaign, the characters wouldn't think it odd that a British word snuck into their world.
Question though; since when can't we use halfling? People other than TSR/WoTC and Tolkien have been using that (and things like Ent, etc) all over the place for years.
