Christopher Tolkein also compiled the Silmarilion from J.R.R.'s notes.

Personally, I think the results read like just that - a bunch of notes thrown together. For an avid Tolkein fan, this is great news, but for those who appreciate a work's cohesiveness as much as the ideas presented...fair warning, it will probably be just what they claim it to be...more stuff thrown together to be sold as a single book.

Brian, not sure what your point is. I don't believe The Silmarillion was meant to be a novel a la LoTRs, it wouldn't have mattered if J.R.R. finished and published it or his son. It would "read" the same - additional tales and legends.

None the less, The Silmarillion is a great work. And yes, definitely more interesting for hardcore fans. So I'm thrilled about the new work . . . and they're calling it a tale, which to me means more Tolkien goodness!

*chuckles* Mate, your looking at a fellow who read the entire published Encyclopedia Britanica when he was in Jr High. Relatively light reading like Tolkien doesn't bother me.

Eh, it should be interesting, and I'll probably end up getting a copy (completist nature) but I don't think I'll read it.

I love the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.

Definitely excited at the prospect of getting a good First Age tale!

It did take three tries to get into The Silmarillion (the first two being back in 6th and 8th grades) before it finally clicked for me several years ago (1998?). It is now my favorite of JRRT's works. I will definitely be buying the new one when it is released.

On another board a few years ago, it was said that anyone that finished reading The Silmarillion was a big nerd. I thought I was big nerd BEFORE I ever heard that. Besides, there's worse things someone could be.

I gave the Silmarilion a try a long time ago, but never made it very far, now that I'm older and more mature , I may give it another try. This new work will be worth at least a look , then I'll decide if its worth a buy or not.

man, I love the Silmarillon and Unfinished Tales. In fact, when the Silmarillon first came out ('77? '78? '79?) I read it so avidly that all my initial D&D characters were named after First Age elves (Finwe, etc).

I'll definitely be checking out the new 'tale'.

Hmm, all this talk of Tolkien's work and especially the forthcoming book, has got me pumped up. I just pulled out my Book of Lost Tales (part 1) which I've been perusing. I think it might be time for a complete reread of the Professor's works!
[Although, I think there might be one or two more books that I need for a complete collection!]

Very neat! And not something I'd ever have expected.

I really enjoyed the Silmarillion, and will be very curious to see how this turns out.
