Is there anything out there that does what paypal does without raping you on each transaction?

You mean like banks or credit cards?
Oh wait...
They do it that too but on a monthly basis on service fees or interest.
Being serious for a moment, unfortunately none that I'm aware of. If there is another competitor out there, then they aren't on the same level of acceptance and support as Paypal. Even then, there would also charge something.
Services like these are seldom free but depending on what you need to do, maybe your own bank might have something in place. I know that with a few Canadian banks, you can email a money transfer for instance.

it's true.
I just re-read the agreements and realized they always have a fee for all accounts for receiving money, I had thought it was just for premier accounts which they basically force you to accept to use eBay.
I had thought the fees were for the premiere accts so that I was being railroaded.
whatever. it is the oldest and best at what they do, I guess.

Even if there was (I have a vague memory that there was at one time) who is going to use it? Most companies have been slow to adapt to Paypal and once that commitment is made why use another similar service?
Paypal already has the brand name for this kind of service. Almost everyone knows it like, Kleenex and Coke. Who is going to know someone like Transfer Service or something like that.
And, lets face it that other company would have to charge also to be kept in business... so I don't really see any upside, other that what competition would do, but that competition would have to be aggressive and have a lot of financial backing, like maybe Google.
Of, course this is all IMO and I am not a financial wihzzz.

But that still costs money doesn't it? And if it didn't, chances are you're mailing it so it'll cost at least the price of a stamp.
However, it's certainly less expensive and more secure than a personal check.

Costs more than a paypal transaction in some cases.

Then you must have a really crappy system for getting them, or are paying for something that costs under $2-5. The post office sells money orders at a very reasonable rate and nearly every bank (except mine, naturally) offers them for very reduced rates or offers them for free... and yeah, there is the postage needed, and I always suggest they get sent via certified mail (or at least delivery confirmation). Hell, even many gas stations sell them for .39 - slightly over $1 (helps to know what's available at what price) so they're not that bad, considering for ~ .79 cents you can send $300 (the usual maximum allowed by the store, in my experience.)
Of course, that is what this is.... my experience. Money Order tends to work better,if not a longer process, than PayPal, if you're trying to avoid the fees (especially if you are the recipient of the funds.)

Oh... I never said that money orders were unreasonable.
Money Orders are good though I get them at the post office. My bank charges too much for them.
On the flip side, the difference is really who is handling the fees.
Money Order is the buyer... Paypal is the seller.
As a buyer and even as the occasional seller, I prefer the convenience of Paypal but I can admit that it sucks seeing those fees taken from the payment. As a buyer, I like Paypal but as a seller, I'm willing to receive money orders.

On that, Mr. M, we can most definitely agree.

Various start-ups have tried to compete with PayPal but just can't manage to get any traction in the marketplace. Being owned by eBay gives PayPal a huge built-in advantage that, at the moment, can't be cracked. I don't see this changing in the near future.

I vaguely recollect some off-brand payment thingie but I think they mysteriously disappeared around the time Ebay bought PayPal...
