Making your own worlds can be very rewarding. I've been selling my worlds for over 30 years now. My very good friend, Ed Greenwood turned his homegrown world into the Forgotten Realms. Look what Gary Gygax did with his home world. I'm sure he's smiling up there when he sees all of you mention that you ran Greyhawk for a few years.
World building is a lot of fun and seeing the smiles on your friends faces when you show them a new secret of your world is even more fun.

The age-old question - homebrew or published world?

Hey there.
I'm poking my head in after many months (years?) absence. Real Life just got in the way (but, my son is now 9 and starting to get interested in D&D, so I will be running for him).
I started gaming in '78, and have used one of several home-made campaign worlds exclusively until the very late 90's, when I ran in a remote part of the Forgotten Realms, one adventure in Greyhawk, and a short campaign in the Wilderlands of High Fantasy.
I like my worlds, but the gamers that grew up in them have moved on, and I find it easier to get going with a pre-generated world.
I have started updating one of my worlds. The maps are here http://www.flickr.com/photos/17086534@N02/ if anyone cares.

I also love the rewarding aspect of making my own world, which is one of the big reasons why I want go that route again. My players didn't stay long, but some of the things I brounght to the game were very interesting to them and they did enjoy it.

Yes, I think we all care about seeing awesome maps, and yours are fantastic! Welcome back to posting, and keep up the work on those worlds because the maps are intriguing.

Thanks for the compliment!
I fell in love with the style of the Judges Guild maps and tried to capture it in mine. These were the first successful ones (although, I design them in Portrait rather than Landscape orientation so they fit better on letter sized paper)
This map is a colony of my main realm. There are no silly permanent magical gates connecting it to the mainland, so it's a several month voyage by sea, causing the colony to be fairly isolated.
This land was once the seat of power for an ancient dragon-worshipping race, and dragons are prevalent, (but they run small - I expect the characters to be battling dragons from 1st level on up) as are ruins of their ancient civilization. The goblinoids have picked up some civilization, but will butt heads with the colonists, and first part of the campaign will revolve around dealing with them (hopefully, via treaties, but probably via killing them and taking their stuff).
The Dragon King has become introspective over time, but when he finds out about the colonists, he will try to conquer them. It will take him time to rebuild his forces, but when he does......
