The Loss of a Friend
The Loss of a Friend
First off, I'm not an animal lover. In many cases, I'm not even an animal liker. But last night, our dog Sammy was hit by a car and killed. It hit us all really hard. My son, who is nine, cried all night. It's a horrible thing. I always at "crazy" pet owners who cried when they lost a pet. But losing Sammy made me realize it's not so crazy. I don't even know why I am telling anyone. It's cathartic I guess. Whatever it is, it sucks.

It can be quite difficult as the people who do own pets tend to adopt them as members of the family and, in turn, they as well. It's perfectly natural and, for some of us, it certainly doesn't make it any easier if it's a pet.
My condolences to your family.

It's not so crazy either way. Fatherhood has a habit of making you see life from an angle you never considered.
Like the movie Face Off, good action flick right?
First time I saw it and the son buys it in the first scene, I had to turn off the TV. It was the first year that I lived in another state away from my kid and only got to see him for the holidays and summer. I was already feeling like there was a hole in my life.
While I can't understand people who spend thousands of dollars on vet bills, I was once a 9 year old who cried at the death of my best friend, too.

Having two dogs that were 14 and 17 years old when they were put down, I can sympathize. Having and losing pets is never any easy thing!

I'm sorry for your loss. I felt the same when my childhood dog was put to sleep due to old age, and when my pet rabbit died. He was 10 years old, which is pretty ancient for a rabbit, but it still shocked and hurt me deeply.

Sorry to hear man. I'm not one to partake in having pets myself, but a tragic loss to the family no doubt. All the best to you and your boy.

Re: The Loss of a Friend
Never easy losing a member of the family, even if they have 4 legs.

Sorry for your loss and for your son, Kim.
I like my pet more than I like most people.
Agreed, on both parts.

We buried him today. Jake wrote a letter for him and put it in with him. We wrapped him in his favorite blanket and put him in his bed. We all had something to say. Kevin ran back to the house to get some of those Bacon Treats and we dropped a few in there. He loved those damned things. We miss him.
Thanks for your kind words.
I'll go back to being an arrogant jack ass tomorrow. maybe Friday.
(ps If you follow me on Facebook, you just read that twice. Sorry.)

You're in my thoughts AGNKim; I lost my cat last year and it was unbearable.
I still feel it to this day.

Pets are a part of the family, so you're feelings are totally normal.
I'm sorry for your loss and hope it's better every day.

It's the price we pay for the love they give us. All those happy years, with their silliness and their games, their annoying habits and their overwhelming devotion and love for us, must be paid for by the gaping hole they leave in our hearts when we must let them go.
I lost two dogs in the same year; they were inseperable. We lost our first girl in the May of 2001. She had a heart attack and, just as we'd gotten to the vet, she had another, fatal attack. Died in my arms. Kerry, her companion, was never the same. She pined terribly, and her fourteen years all seemed to descend on her at once. She became old in just a few months. She also had a sudden heart attack, and died whilst I was holding her, standing in the snow outside the vet's surgery, waiting for the emergeny vet to arrive. It was late New Year' Eve, you see. He was very kind, and not put out in the slightest.
My current dog is just a little over two (that's him on my avatar), and hopefully I have over a decade to share with him, but one day we'll have to take that last journey together. In truth, I choke a little when contemplating the idea.
But the simple fact is that he's already paid in full for the pain that day will bring. Every day he's been in our life, he's brought a full measure of joy, with his antics and his games, his irrepressible character and his simple love. I'd be lost without him. In fact, I didn't know just how depressed (and downright curmudgeonly) I was getting until that silly, hairy, fat little butterball showed up and turned the lights on.
So, whatever the pain, it's worth it. They pay us back in full, and much more.

Sorry to hear the news.
I've never made my feelings about animals a secret and I especially love my three cats. I can't imagine what parting with any of them will be like when the time comes.
