All gone... probably close to 200 bookmarks of various sorts spanning years of surfing. Obscure gems of some sites in a few cases.

I had to uninstall Firefox since its registry has someone got corrupted. Having used Firefox for a few years, I knew were the bookmark file was located. Or at least I thought I knew. Sometime between upgrades, Firefox stopped using the bookmark file it had been using and was storing it in a different location. I just didn't notice.

When I uninstalled the program... I was also very thorough with purging references to it before re-installing the browser. I suppose I could be a bit grateful since I still have an outdated list of bookmarks so all is not lost.

I know I needed to clean that up but this was NOT the way to do it.

Firefox installs never touch the profile folder, so you shouldn't have needed to be so thorough. That said, in the future backup "places.sqlite" and for that matter the entire profile before you do anything.

The change you refer to was made upon release of Firefox 3.0 IIRC.

You can also export the bookmarks at any time. Click Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks > Backup (or Export HTML). I prefer the Export.

It is my nature to be thorough. However, since I've been using the Firefox in its various stages of development before version 1, I just was used to doing it the old fashioned way.
Besides -- all I needed to save were the bookmarks.

The time line is sounds about right... the older bookmark I unwittingly backed up was dated from August of last year. Some of my gems have been saved. I'm using this as an excuse to review all of the material. It will still be a slow one.

As for exporting the bookmarks... you know, I just never really noticed it. In part because how I did it before seemed to work so well.

It was my 'arg' moment of the week I think.

For a while, if I had an XP reboot (like after a power outage), it would delete all my bookmarks. That hasn't happened lately, but it got me in the habit of backing up my bookmarks.

check out opera link, synchronizes bookmarks so you can never loose them:

I'm sure there is an extension that mimics this behavior in Firefox (as there seems to be for every other opera feature).

Or, just install Firefox on a USB drive and carry it with you everywhere. Don't even need it on the computer.

I like my Firefox... and normally... I don't have a problem with my computer setup to begin with.

However, my computer's days are numbered.

Though I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to pay for the new purchase, I expect that I will somehow get a new system before the year is through. My computers don't tend to last more than 4 years (one way or the other) and this system is past due.

The hardware has been at the heart of the issue for the past year-and-a-half and upgrading is not really worth considering. If I did choose to upgrade, the CPU, motherboard, Ram, and Video Cards would need to be targeted. Which is... a new computer.

Basically my motherboard is an older 949 socket board, my CPU was amongst the first dual core Athlon chips AMD did. Upgrading the CPU would mean upgrading the motherboard... the 2 gigs of ram would also need to be increased significantly for the work I'm now doing. Video Cards? Well, for what they were a few years ago... a pair of Nvidia 6600 GT cards for my SLI setup; they are still decent cards if I don't aim to do much modern gaming on my PC.

So yeah... I need a new rig.

I'm not looking to get a very fancy one. Where as I was accustomed of spending $2500 for a system to start (plus an upgrade or two a couple of years in) -- I'm trimming that down to a much more modest $1500.

Reason is that video games are no longer the major driving force behind my technological needs -- I have an XBox 360 for that now.

It will be a happy day when I'll be able to retire that present rig. In the meantime, the loss of the bookmarks is an annoyance amongst a whole list of issues. The bookmarks was my fault... the reason for the initial corruption was do to another nasty crash / spontaneous reboot.

And this.. this is just cathartic!

With Firefox, you can clean up your bookmarks a lot by just installing Zotero (free add in) and just dropping some of the rarer or smaller sites into Zotero which will store it on your local harddrive. These can be exported as well.

Reminds me of when you're in the Cook Exceptions panel and you accidentally click on "Remove all sites" instead of the "Remove Site" button!! Argh! indeed.

May I recommend the the add-on for Firefox Foxmarks http://www.foxmarks.com/

Been using for a while now and its handy to keep bookmarks saved and co-ordinated between multiple machines.

$1500 can get you a beast of a machine these days. Heck even $500 can get a monster if you know what you are doing. If you are really thrifty and keep your case, drives, ans power supply, ~$200 can hook ya up nicely as well.

True... but seeing that this would be a couple of optical drives, a 250 meg hard drive, and the power supply; I'm saving only $200 - $250 max from that $1500 price tag I've been looking at (I've been doing quite a bit of pricing and price comparisons). Case is something I'd want to switch up anyway.

Don't get we wrong... I am salvaging what I can and, at the very least, the hard drive is likely to get pulled and installed in the new computer as an extra drive.
