City of Magicians

Post by dunbruha »

Hi-

I'm looking for a sourcebook for a city of magic/magicians. I have Glantri, but am looking for something else. Any game system would be fine. Preferentially, not an city of evil magicians (like Kheshatta). I am trying to find something to use for Tula (in the Wilderlands). Any suggestions?

White Wolf did one via their Sword and Sorcery Scarred Lands line. I believe "Mithril" was in the name. They are nominally ruled by good aligned Necromancers.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Eh, not really what I'm looking for. It's not really a "City of Magicians". But it's cheap--I might pick it up anyway... (I'm a sucker for city books)

btw, you mentioned that you have the new Pathfinder City book. Does it have any cities that might work?

I posted the brief descriptions of each city in the other thread. None of them sound to be ruled by mages, but a couple sound like they could easily be made that way.

Another easy one to convert is Bards Gate. That one is via Necromancer Games, published via White Wolfs Sword and Sorcery imprint. I think. The other possible publishers are the Trolls and Kenzer, but I am pretty sure its one of the last done via White Wolf.

If you look on RPGNow you'll find it under Necromancer Games.

Interesting...

I'm probably going to pick up the Pathfinder Cities book, but I'm going to wait for my FLGS to get it.

I'm enjoying it. Nothing ground breakingly new like PC golems, but cool stuff with nice twists.

Another city I have been enjoying is the 3 modules Goodman Games has done around Punjar. Using 4E is a little easier to convert to C&C than 3E is, IMO. But it would require a good bit of rewriting for having mages in charge.

Now having one mage in charge would be easy.

Yeah. Here's the description for Tula:

"Tula, the ancient and legendary City of Mages, is the home of the many schools of magic."

"Tula is renowned as a city of wizardry, its many colored towers containing the famous schools of wizards particularly the Chromatic Wizards, who wear their strange colored robes."

This is such a cool concept, it seems like someone must have done something like it... I may go with Glantri, but it doesn't seem as exotic at this does.

That sounds familiar, what product is that from?

Doh! I forgot you mentioned that in your OP. Yeah, now I know why it sounds familiar. I have tons of WL materials, including 3 copies of the Necromancer boxed set.

I don't know if it'll be of service, but there's also the Kingdom of Glantri boxed set for the AD&D Mystara setting. Decent information on magocrices and the like.

Read his OP, he already has Glantri.

Headless Hydra Games has a page on Drive-thru RPG . They have a setting called Mor Aldenn. It provides a rough overview in 25 pages and lets you fill in the rest of the details.

[smug]

Then he needs nothing else.

Sorry! I read that and interpreted it that he didn't have Glantri. Don't know why.
But it is pretty good. I don't think there's much out there that can top it as far as magical society primers go.

Yes, it is good, but I don't think it has the right feel for Tula. And besides, I am already leaning toward using it for the other mage-dominated city in the WL, Valon.
