Quality Dice Suggestions???

Post by Joe »

Hi,

I am a bit of a dice collector.

I have been attracted to Chessex due to their interesting assortment, but lately I have been dissapointed with their quality.

It seems the last two sets I bought from them has weird warping and uneven surfaces, esp on the d20.

Can anyone suggest an alternative company that makes good quality dice?

I would recommend Crystal Caste. I buy all my dice and game mats from them. If you have the money they have some very cool unique material dice... like dice made from actual meteorite material, ivory from a wooly mammoth, teeth of a prehistoric Megalodon shark and others (look at their "Dwarven Stones" for the good stuff).

Yeah, my only problem with them is they sell you dyed stuff, or quality that is so low I wouldn't call them those types of stones any more.

So I would only buy the hematite, Rose quartz, and quartz stones. The rest are crap, or crappy and color dyed, and therefore way over priced.

Thats my opinion about those "stones".

As for their normal dice, those are pretty good.

Some people seem to like Q-Workshop.

You want quality and durability? You can never go wrong with Gamescience dice. I used to be a collector, had the crystal dice, the metal dice, obsidian dice, dinosaur bone die, meteorite die, just to name a few. The only dice I have kept and still regularly use is the original dice I bought when I was 12. I'm not gonna say how old I am, lets just say it has been a significant amount of time. The dice are almost exactly the same as the day I bought them. I've had many of pair of dice that start to fail within a year.

Plus Lou Zocchi is a nice man.

Game Science makes the best dice, hands down. They are literally perfect. Their d20 has an absolute 5% chance per side. There is a pretty passionate video from the owner of the company on their site. He has been making polyhedrons since before DnD was first published.

I've got some made out of catseyes and a few other minerals and semi precious stones.

A friend of mine has a crazy girlfriend who had her 22 year old cat's ashes turned into six-sided dice. Some company in Europe does such things, apparently.

Gamescience

Q-Workshop.

Chessex had a long, good run and still make some interesting looking dice, but I agree. Chessex has lowered it's quality over the past few years.

Gamescience dice are crisp, for the most part accurate, and classic in every way. Over the years the colors of Gamescience dice have really come a long way. Brilliant, vibrant and beautiful.

Q-Workshop dice are laser etched, and frankly have awesome amounts of detail. They are expensive, but a quality product.

I'll throw my vote in for Gamescience. I've heard Lou Zocchi's speech about dice and I tell ya, he knows his stuff. His dice are the best made dice, hands down. If you want quality made dice, and don't care how "pretty" they are (because they're kind of plain), then buy some Gamescience dice.
Here is a couple interesting videos with Lou explaining the issues with other dice at GenCon '08. Very interesting stuff.

I have three sets of Q Workshop dice that I love for their detailed etchings but I normally go back to my gamescience dice for sheer randomized satisfaction. My other sets are mostly loaner dice for when a player forgets to bring their own.

Yeah, I like my Game Science dice for murdering player characters. I lost my original GS dice back in the late 90's and never bought more until last year. I know they worked pretty well when I ran Slave Pits of the Undercity and smoked three pc's in two hours. I wasn't even being cruel, either.

I only owned a few Q-workshop dice, but they seemed to be more style than substance. Beautiful ivory looking spider-themed d6s. Used them every chance I got but they started to chip after about a year.

Here's another agreement about Chessex quality. Last year I picked up a couple of Chessex sets for sharing and the D20 quality stinks. When rolled they're the closest thing I've seen to a perpetual motion machine and show obvious bias.

Game Science hands down. I've got Game Science dice from when I was 13. The D8 is kaput but I guess that's what happens when you step on the dice bag. Game Science dice picked up over the last couple of years show the same amount of quality.

Last month I picked up some Q-Workshop "Elvish" dice. They look very nice but are very light. I'll see how they fare.

What self-respecting gamer would forget his dice?!
(Are those the ones I used a few times? They are nice.)

I have the Elvish blue set and I agree, they lack the heft I'm used to from regular dice. I use mine a far bit, but they do have this odd, delicate feel to them.

My own Chessex (and I've bought a few sets recently) still seem to be behaving very well, and I've spotted no signs of warping; was there any particular range that was showing poor quality?

Gamescience dice seem to be very, very hard to come by over here in poor old Blighty, but they are very good. I once had an orange d20 that saw two decades of constant use before an accidental drop down the stairs onto a tiled floor cracked it.

I could've wept.

I would guess that 3 out of the last 6-7 sets of Chessex dice I got all had screwy d20s.

Being the predominant die rolled at games this is not acceptable.

Yeah, I had been using the same Chessex set of dice for pretty much the whole run of 3.5 and I just retired them for a completely new set of Game Science dice. The Chessex d20's in particular never seemed to roll anything between a 8 and an eleven. We joked about it one day and rolled it out.

Game Science is the shizzle and if you have a thin-tip permanent marker you can save $4 per set of dice by coloring in the numbers yourself, which takes all of ten minutes.

Sure a black marker would work for lighter dice but what if the dice are black?

Can anyone suggest a crayon or something?

I usually use a silver fine tip permanent marker for such dice.

I still use the old white crayon routine on gamescience dice. Works every time.
