With 13th Warrior, you have to remember that it was based on a piece of fiction, that has never claimed to be historical in fact or scope. The film doesn;t address this, and clearly didn't try to be accurate. Great flick though, almost better book.

Well, wasn't 13th Warrior based on Crichton's book Eaters of the Dead which has it's basis on Ibn Fadlan's somewhat scattered writings/accounts of his visits with the Vikings?

Yes, Crichton threw in some Beowolf, but I think most of his work can be considered historically correct.

So, I'm not saying that the 13th Warrior is historically accurate (haven't seen it), but that Crichton's book contains elements of historical accuracy from those accounts of Ibn Fadlan.

The book itself is no more than a compilation of translations and best guesses of Ibn Fadlan's notes. (I have a first printing) The movie does a surprisingly good job of following said book. Although it would have been cool had the movie included the dwarves mentioned in said book. ^_^

gideon, I would have to disagree with you. I don't think that the movie follows the book that well at all. Yeah, the main theme is there and many of the big parts, but there is soooooooooooooooo much that is cut out. Frankly The 13th Warrior would be absolutely fantastic if they could have included all (or at least some) of the other moments in the book.

For example:

Sailing up the Volga river and watching the seasons change

The encounter with the "dragon" at sea.

Buliwyf caliming the sword from the ruins of his homeland

The Viking men and thier relationships with women

More then just one scene with the viking "oracle."

There is so much more that could have been included, to make this film truely epic.

*smiles* Well, 'suprisingly good' and 'doing an excellent job' are two different things in Pete-speak.

Surpisingly good meaning that they didnt go off into some wierd tangent like many movies (I, Robot) do. As I mentioned though, I too would have liked to have seen more of the book go in there. The dwarves and their forged daggers gift to the viking party in particular. ^_^

I agree and also (to my wife's dislike) have a similar "les speek".

I liked the 13th when I first saw it but it reminded (a little) me of a book I'd read a few years before. I didn't even put the movie & "Eaters of the Dead" together till a few days after the movie. It would have annoyed me if I was expecting the movie to follow the book.

What 13th Warrior does do reeeeaaaally well, however, is emphasize how easy it is to have different fighter 'types' with individual characteristics via the stint of good background, over mechanics. And/or the all 'warrior' party. ^_^

The Illusionist is also a grand movie for ideas on that very class.

I agree. Two coolest words put together in the same sentence?

Indians and Vikings.

The question posed will be interesting, whether fictional or not: Who exactly are the invaders? Are the Vikings the bad guys, or are they returning to exact revenge? Just because the Vikings look like Chaos Warriors out of Warhammer, it doesn't make them necessarily evil. Even if they are the usurpers, it used to be the way things were; you wanted land and you took it, nations never used to draw lines in the sand and jeer at each other, before the world got so fuzzy and cozy.

There is a lot of controversy in my neck of the woods regarding who was really here first based on skeletal remains found nearby and carved stones. It would at least be neat if the movie left the question open ended, like showing some huge runestone deep in a forest or something to that effect.

HA!!! So true. There is no denying the fact that the "vikings" in Pathfinder will end up being the bad guys. No doubt at all. Less this film completely shocks the $#!t out of me!

Yep, for sure. Traider or raiders, barbarians or adventurers, spreading culture or suppressing it. Founding Russia, discovering America or reaching Bagdad, heh - all in a day's life of a fantastical and advanced civilization.

Heh, you have to admit they were pretty good sailors, no?

Ahh, one has got to love one's ancestors!

I just can't get into it. I'm sorry, but the overabundance of bad armour just sticks in my craw. I cringed at the scenes from Underworld: Evolution that were supposed to take place in the 11th Century, but had Viktor, Amelia and Marcus wearing breastplates. It was probably the main thing I despised about The Lord of the Rings movies (well, other than Faramir and Denethor's characters being butchered). To me its no different than going to see a movie about Julius Caesar and having Brutus 'bust a cap in his a$$ with a 9mil' or some such nonsense.

Eh, I'm getting crotchety in my old age.

I agree & when I pointed it out with the DVD playing my wife gave me a look that screamed "It is a vamp movie not a study in history, just injoy the movie, I feel soooo sorry for our daughter" it amazing what she can say in a little look!

I do expect the vikings to be made in the image of evil chaos, the armor to look over done but hope it visually makes up for it & that there are some good fights.

See, I'm the opposite when it comes to that sort of thing. I in no way, shape, or form expect historical accuracy from a production who's single goal is to entertain the masses for a profit.

The goal of a movie isn't reality, its entertaining fantasy.

I'm one of those goofballs that thought Knights Tale was cool, especially when they were singing "We Will Rock You" at a joust.

Sweeeet.

Good point & I too liked the movie -not a top 10 but enjoyable.

I just guess it depends on which side of my brain is in charge at the time. I guess the opening of the movie with the joust & face painted surfs chanting the song kept the voices of historic accuracy quiet. I also liked the "to trudge" by Chauser & his intro to the joust...

It's offical! PATHFINDER gets a new title, kinda. The film is now called PATHFINDER, LEGEND OF THE GHOST WARRIOR.

Heavy rotation of the trailer on the sci-fi channel. It draws nearer. You can almost hear the clanking of the Viking's armour. The imdb has a trailer up as well if you need a fix:
