Interesting question. I'm not sure it can be answered without asking a ton of other questions, with a quasi-simulation point of view applied.

Quasi-simulations can be fun but take a lot of time for a very small task.

So, I'd handle it this way:

1) The only market for the parts would be in a city, and then only with artisans/alchemists/craftsmen that have the tools and ability to work with the material. So, finding a buyer is not going to be easy.

2) Having said that, it's still a seller's market. It's a red dragon for crying out loud.

3) When a buyer is found, do not bargain over each part. Have the buyer make an offer for the whole package. That way you don't have to conceptualize a use for each part.

4) Think of some of the items that might be made with the parts. Armor, amulets, spear heads, whatever. Don't get into detail, just consider what they might be. Then go to the magic item list to get a value for those items. Find an item that is average - not the least expensive, like a potion, but not most expensive, like a rare staff or artifact. Something reasonable, in the middle. Take 5-10% of that number, depending on your game's economy. After all, raw materials are only a portion of the total value of an item.

This is your cost per part. Multiply that by the number of parts, and there's your overall offer.

And then, the character gets assassinated for the audacity to sell such a beloved and powerful creature, or for making more money in one day then the kingdom is worth.

This is a very broad question that in return asks many questions of your campaign world. Are red dragons common? Are red dragons commonly hunted and sold for parts in your world? As serleran said, there could be a host of other problems associated with killing such a beast. If the parts are rare, perhaps they command prices that money alone cannot cover. It's a very broad question that is very much tied to your personal campaign.

It sort of reminds me of the questions I used to see back in the day, when there was still very little difference between the game and the campaign setting as a concept. It was just assumed there was a "way" to do things that was the same for everyone.

So I got a little nostalgia kick. Naturally my approach makes a lot of assumptions in its simplicity.

My instinct is to make the parts so horribly difficult to sell that they are only valuable for personal use by the PC and his/her friends.

You don't sell them you make a cool sled from its bones to drag your loot around in. Then you decorate the rest of your gear with it's scales and teeth, because that is how adventurers role

Thanks for all the info. We finally made two suits of red dragon scale mail armor and our wizard used the backbone to make a staff. We just winged it for pricing.
