So my Web Development teacher instructs is we have to have at least 3 browsers to work with and need to get out of any 'unreasonable love' we have for a particular browser. Her suggestions were Internet Exploder, Firefox, Opera and maybe Chrome.

I downloaded Opera and Chrome this weekend and Chrome did what it did the last time I tried it; would not fully execute and then crashed. So I ended up with Opera.

So far it's been an ok experience. But I am not sure about it. Anyone else use it that can give me some tips on making the transition and getting used to Opera easier?

Couldn't and wouldn't be able to tell you as Chrome and Opera are both incompatible with the stuff I need to work, so it is very much pointless to have either installed. Well, Chrome sort of works... since it rips off Firefox for some plugin details, which in turn rips off Internet Explorer for some of its information... so, I guess I might be able to force it to work, but I'd rather wimp out and use one I know is going to be useful.

The tricks to learning to love Opera are...

1. Use the full-screen mode more.

2. Remember that Safari and some other browsers ripped off their "quick links" page from Opera.

3. Practice the mouse gestures for reloading a page, going forward, going back, and closing the current tab.

4. Download a nice theme

Opera is a good browser. The best browser I don't use... often. The best feature for web dev is Dragonfly.

BTW, you have Firebug installed in Firefox?

I use opera a lot on one of my linux installs and it works fine for me. There are some intranet pages at work that will only display properly on Firefox in linux and the newer firefox iterations seem to load pages a bit more quickly (again in linux). On my main installs I use nothing but firefox because of the free add in called Zotero which I no longer can live without...

I also love the adblock and noscript addins which help prevent unwanted ads and virii infections. I wouldnt wipe my ass with Internet Explorer. Mainly because its a web browser and not solid.

I use Opera as my default browser. Over all I find it fast, effective and stable.

If you really want to love it, though, try some widgets.

I can tell you guys that I like the speed dial very much and the smooth scrolling is good.

Dumb question; where can these gestures be found? This is the first I knew of them.

I use Chrome and the Opera the most on my linux machine. Chrome almost exclusively on Windows.

I like both better than Firefox and IE.

I use Firefox with several security add-ons. I've never tried Opera and I stay away from Chrome due to the huge amounts of information Google is gathering on everybody via search engines, browser cookies, DNS, etc.

My problem with chrome is that after install it never gets beyond opening the frame. It throws and error and crashes. I'm getting used to Opera but I haven't found anything like adblock or WOT for it which I really like on Firefox.

Wish I could help you, Julian. I use Chrome on both Windows and Linux and never have any trouble (using it right now in fact).

Opera does have some fairly advanced adblock features, though.

The Chrome problem was the sandboxing. If you turn it off it works. Apparently Chrome doesn't play nice with Symantic Endpoint.

Thanks. Chrome is a cute little thing but I am not sole on it. Currently I would rank the browsers I have this way:

1. Firefox

2. Opera

3. Chrome

4. Internet Exploder

Chrome is very minimalist. The basic functionality of these browsers is acceptable to me no matter which I use, so a lot of what I look at in ranking them is speed. Chrome runs fastest for me

I'm enjoying Chrome. It may bump up one on the list and tie with Opera.

Quick Opera question; how do I import my bookmarks to it? I tried the way it suggested but couldn't get it to work.

Good question. I've used Opera and Chrome as my main browsers for long enough (and Opera before Chrome) that I haven't imported in a while.

Yep. I got the pack in bookmarks that come with FF but not the ones I have added. I may try the suggested bookmark manager since I have went to multiple browsers.

I'm not actually talking anything malicious here (other than cookies which is only malicious depending on your point of view). Google does collect IP, ISP, search, etc. results for various reasons. The privacy policy lists a given time for retaining each piece of information and I do believe they follow it.

My problem however, is highlighted by Google's recent problem's in China. I don't like any one point of attack having that much information on that many people so I tend not to contribute to anything Google.
And Julian, if you're interested in Firefox add-ons like Adblock Plus you might also want to try BetterPrivacy, Cookie Monster and NoScript.
