Thickest GM Screen EVER!
Thickest GM Screen EVER!
Howdy all -
I dropped my local game shop (Zombie Planet, Albany NY) on my way home from work this evening -
I only had a few minutes and was casually browsing when I saw the new Doctor Who Adventures in Time and Space "Gamemaster's Screen". Being a fan of the show and already owning the new rpg boxed set - I snagged it without thought. Later this evening, I broke the shrink wrap to see what lie inside...
http://shop.cubicle7store.com/epages/es ... ts/CB71101
WOW, this is by far the thickest most durable screen I've ever seen!
Each panel of the 4 panel double sided screen is "thicker" than the covers of most hard backs I own. TLG Books included.
While the Hackmaster screen wins hands down with bells and whistles, the new DWAITS screen could easily stop a bullet (or high projectile rabid animal). The artwork is gorgeous and the production value is exceptional.
If TLG could make a screen this thick for C&C it would truly be a feat of awesomeness ^_^
Even if you're not a fan of the show (or the rpg), you should definitely check it out! I look forward to see what Cubicle Seven has in store for the new Lord of The Rings RPG.
Cheers!

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

Honestly, why all the fuss about super-thick screens over the last year or so? Why would anybody need to have a screen that thick? Perhaps if players throw those deece at you than I can seen the need. I got one of the thick WHFRP2 thick ass screens a few years ago, and it's cool an all, but I also have a screen that I use from the basic D&D days. That one has been used hundreds of times and is thin, and has stood the test of time.

In my opinion, because most modern, non-harcover screens suck. They stand kinda lopsided or bendy and look rather limp and cheap. My AD&D 2nd Edition screen isn't hardcovered but that is a quality thin screen that doesn't stand like a soggy noodle. If most modern screens were at least of that quality it would be cool, but sadly they are not. It seems companies need to use hardcovers these days to give us a non semi-flacid screen.
Even the CK screen (the two I have anyways) slightly curls inwards on the upper outer corners. It's annoying. The d20 Dragonlance screen was AWFUL in that regards. With most of my fantasy gaming I use my old 2nd Edition screen with inserts paperclipped to the inside.
I also plan on using the PF screen and picking up the new C&C screen in order to attack the table to the PF screen permanently for my Golarian C&C games.

As much as I like the CK screen I do think I would like to see a thicker version. The only issue I have with mine is that the quad folds can do some funky things from time to time. Such as closing up at strange moments.
So I can see a thicker one with some type of binding as a good alternative and something I would pay extra for.

Well the Trolls didn't go with thicker, its pretty much the same as the original.
Fortunately I have not had the problems you and DD mention. Well, I did have it closing up on me at first, but it is well trained now.

I'm not talking about them doing it now but, sometime down the road when it is a feasible expense.

Well, I was hoping the super duper thick screen they had at Troll Con would be it, but unfortunately the cost issues were too high.

One could modify the screen rather easily. All you need is a sympathetic kinko's worker who will let you use the color copier on copyrighted material. I have a really badass laser printer that Office Max foolishly put on sale, personally.
Regardless, I have the Doctor Who screen as well and I am confident I could probably stop a low-calibur bullet with its thickness.
Anyhow, I have about thirty DM screens from friggin' everything.

Low caliber bullets (like the 9mm luger/parabellum) usually have a higher muzzle velocity than higher caliber rounds (eg the .45 acp) and thus have a greater initial penetration than the larger pistol rounds on average. You wanna know what is actually bulletproof? An old 3rd gen ipod. I couldnt get a 9mm round to go all the way through the backplate on that thing.

When I heard that the Dr. Who crenn was the thickest screen ever published, I was thinking about the 2E WFRP screen and wondering how in the hell could a screen be thicker than that one?! When I read this, I assumed that the Dr. Who screen was made out of fiberboard or something . But now that Break-to-da-daddy clarified that the WFRP2E screen is still thicker, I can breath a sigh of relief that these companies haven't completely lost their mind when it comes to screen thickness.
Because we all know it's how we wield the screen, not how thick it is.

They are pretty small though. I don't mind a small screen, especially on that is laser printed into anything cool you'd like. They just weren't clear if you could laser print both sides. As a matter of fact I found their website to be not very friendly to those who would like to do their own design, even though they say you can. It seems like one big pain in the ass.
I wish they had something like what Lulu has, the ability to design what you want, with instructions for sizes etc. and submitting it without having to talk to anyone.
Oh well maybe I'll try it someday.
Till then I am trying to think of a way that one could make effective OD&D screens. Any suggestions would be cool.

I personally hate wobbly screens! But I dont need it to block bullets either. Because I do, on rare occasion, play other game systems, I ordered the Ultimate GM Screen, which is a bad ass four panel vinyl screen where you can insert your own charts or artwork, both on the front and back of the screen. Then, I saw the Savage Worlds Customizabel Screen, and decided I liked the landscape style screen (that, and I have been replacing Gurps with Savage Words) and just got that too. The cool thing is, you can use these things for players too, by placing maps, handouts, and stuff like that in them and putting it out on the table for easy view and mood setting.....fun.
I am working on my own C&C screen inserts, utilizing some homemade CL charts and stuff as well.

The screen company I mentioned above has yet to get back to me. I've e-mailed them about a week ago and haven't heard a peep from them.
The store looks active, but for those who are considering buying something from them, throw them a e-mail to make sure they are alive.
The mind boggles some times the way business' are run. A few days I get... from here on in my interest will wane for every day I don't hear from them till I won't buy things from them, even if they where the last screen company alive.
If I do, I'll e-mail them back telling them how their slow response will/could have lost them a customer.

Goodman Games' DM Screen is pretty damn thick. It's the nicest quality one that I own. It's very sturdy cardboard and has a laminate finish to it. It survived one beer spill very well. And, unlike all the other D&D 3.x screen I own, it actually has shite I need on it (conditional modifiers, etc.).
