A Hell of a Thing

So I was running my C&C game last night.

The player characters are as follows:

Paladin - 2, Bard - 3, & Cleric - 3.

They have two henchmen:

Fighter - 2, & Wizard - 1.

So my campaign is set in Perrenland on Greyhawk and I have adapted Umbrage Saga to fit within the area. I have added a few things to the area, such as a large green dragon that I intended to be a source of menace over the early levels of the party. Essentially whenever the pc's traverse the Blacktooth Ridge there is a 1 in twenty chance they will encounter this dragon, which could result in a number of consequences.

So they roll a random encounter as they spot sixteen goblins trekking across this field in daylight (for some reason). They decide to ambush them, as goblins have proven to be bothersome lately. Where they triggered the encounter, however, was literally within sight of the green dragon's lair.

So the dice being as they are, triggered the dragon to rise from its lair and dive into combat in the fifth round.

It decided it would "play" with them for awhile until it got bored. So basically it held off dealing any serious breath weapon attacks as it parlayed on the ground with them. Due to its 25 AC they were only able to deal one hit to it over the next six rounds.

I figured the pc's would run and take shelter in the ridge, but the dragon bit the wizard and nearly killed him and the paladin would not leave him to die.

So there was a decision, and the party decided to fight or die.

So I let them have it.

I had the dragon melee them for another two rounds. It had a total of 42 hit points, and after the bard and paladin both got in hits it was reduced to 17 hit points (from a total of four hits, including spells).

So on top of round fourteen I announce that on this turn it is going to attempt to fly upwards. The bard strikes it with a broadsword and rolls a '20' dealing 14 points of damage.

The dragon, on its turn, hits the bard and fighter with a breath weapon dealing enough damage to liquefy them.

The only party member not dead or dying, the paladin fires her longbow at the dragon and rolls a '20.'

I have never heard player's scream so loudly or so happily in my life.

They arrow dealt 7 damage and the dragon went down.

The subsequent looting of its lair radically altered the area of the campaign.

It was fun, though, they had fun. They also lucked out, big time.

I tried to role-play the dragon as cruel and sadistic and arrogant. It played around until it got bled a bit and then was going to eradicate its playthings. They then got grossly lucky and killed it.

I just thought you all would like to hear that story, I will remember it for a long time.

Great story. It reminds me of my Thur. evening wargaming. We share a room with a lot of boardgamers. Occasionally, something very improbable happens during a game and the howls and hoots of the wargamers brings the roof down and generates many an askance look from the boardgamers. Those moments are the poetic essence of good gaming.

Great one, and I'm sure it will be one of those games the players remember fondly for years to come.

That is an awesome story. It's the kind of thing you'll all be retelling 30 years from now!

Yep, its awesome! Our Friday group had a similar session a couple of Fridays ago. Meaning we should have died, but didn't, the dice loved us. Definitely the kind of game session you remember for decades!

I was GMing said Session in my "BardsGate" Campaign

The group stumbled into the 4th level of the dungeon (skipping 1-3 entirely) and walked into the Temple of Orcus- turning some undead guards - wo fled moaning - alerting e temple and calling down the wraith of a Priest 6 lesser Priest (level 4 Clerics) 10 Acolte (C 2) assorted Undead including several Cohorts - some Ghouls and a Living Ogre inPlate armor

Never in my life have I seen characters save so often in all my life.... it should have been a TPK

What a 3 session Combat it turned o to be.

The roup left jus before reinforcements came (as 6 armored Ogres - A former Player character turned Vampire, and the High Priest with various underlings were right behind.

Hraulk the Hessian Barbarian was over the op in the combat.... a creditto his kind
