I can say I have got a lot of use out of what he gave us. And I probably will for many years to come. Salute!

I still count myself lucky - I was able to make it to Winter Dark con in Jan of 2008 and was able to meet Gary once before his passing - he was a gracious and enthusiastic man, generous (he signed both my DMG and my original copy of B2), and will always be missed by those for whom his creations meant so much.

But the biggest testament to the man are his children and family - when you meet Luke, Ernie, Heidi, Elise, Alex and the rest of the clan, and especially learn what terrific individuals they are, you can tell that he was a tremendous person to be remembered beyond gaming.

I'll second everyone's thoughts here. Gary and I had our differences, but he taught me about role playing and allowed me to write some products for TSR. It was a pleasure working for him. He was a great gamer and the best DM I've ever seen. I've looked at his private dungeon and even 30 years later it's light years ahead of its time.

I agree with everything said here... he is responsible for so many of us learning so much about more than just gaming... through gaming.

What I find most noble is his willingness to adapt to lessen the hatred some people and groups bore towards the game.

I did not know Gary personally, but I have never read a single negative comment from he about his critics, especially those in the religious community. I have read article after article talking about how DnD is Satanic and causes kids to commit suicide.

I saw a lot of sinful people casting first stones. I saw Gary Gygax just try and make people happy.

The world, at least from what I see as a RPGer, is a better place because of him.

It only seems like yesterday. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but he helped shape my life and opened my mind to imagination and learning just for the sake of learning.

I met him once, at a Dragon Con some years ago (10 years ago, perhaps). Very down to earth guy, he was. I probably looked foolish, standing there stammering at one of my idols. He probably wondered why I was getting all flustered.

I was getting flustered because he was responsible for how I spent my free time since I was 12 years old. For the tons of books on my shelf. For all the monsters I've slain, all the treasures I've collected, all the towns I saved from certain doom.

Thanks Gary. You are missed, good sir.
