New Computer single player RPG announced

Post by dachda »

see: http://www.38studios.com/news/press_show/25

Looks interesting. Is the first game by Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling's new company 38 Studios. Schilling's worked with board wargames before, he helped form Multiman Publishing which saved Advanced Squadleader from Avalon Hill's sale to Hasbro. He's got R.A. Salvatore (yes that one) and Todd McFarlane (of Spawn fame) working under Ken Rolston the lead designer for Elder Scrolls III" Morrowind and IV: Oblivion. EA just signed a publishing deal with them.

Have to keep an eye on this one. Some good names involved.

Sounds good. I'll be keeping my eye out for additional info!

The only reason this intrigues me is because I am a Boston Red Sox fan. In other Red Sox related news, Nomar Garciaparra retired today:

Curt Schilling is a true gamer, so I think this is intriguing news.

Now, if there was anyone who took a comic career and is turning it into a mini-empire this name has to be at the top.

This pairing does make sense, though using the term 'working under' seems too utilitarian.

Another promising career sabotaged by injuries. He'll fall into the "shoulda, coulda, woulda" category - a great player that was short-changed by injuries. Too bad.

A minor correction, as I was an MMP playtester for years and was around while this went down.

MMP was founded by a group of ASL fans that initially didn't include Curt Schilling. MMP produced an ASL fanzine called "Backblast" which saw two issues. Schilling teamed up with the MMP crew later in 1995 as Avalon Hill essentially sub-contracted out the development of ASL to MMP up until the Dotts, owners of Monarch-Avalon, sold Avalon Hill to Hasbro in 1998 to concentrate on their publishing & printing business.

Curt was an essential factor in Hasbro allowing MMP to license ASL (and eventually a number of other games) through both his personal fame and his wallet (the licensing fee for ASL at the time was in the mid-five figures).

/hijack off

PS - and as an Orioles fan I'm still a bit cheesed off that we traded Schilling (along with Steve Finley & Pete Harnisch) for the decrepit Glen Davis, which was the start of the Orioles' slide into the cellar of the AL East.

I was around at that time to CKDad, and Curt Schilling getting involved with MMP was a real boon to the company. ASL products seemed to become higher quality in appearance, and from some of the players who played at my store, the later 90s seemed to be the best of days for ASL and MMP.

Curt's involvement during that period was pretty much as a playtester during the off-season* and providing financial support (things like DTP software, up-front money to the printers, etc.). The rest of the MMP crew actually did the development work, although the scenario & module designs often came from outside MMP from guys like Pete Shelling.

But yeah, 1995-2000 were really good years for the game.

*I was part of the "Yousehouse Irregulars", the core internal group of playtesters that met weekly in Brian Youse's basement. Curt was playing for Philly and would drive down each week in the off-season. Was pretty funny seeing his Mercedes in the driveway amidst our Saturns (5!) and minivans (2).

Ken Rolston I've met before, was a big RQ fan in early 90's. Rolston kinda looks like George Carlin and can do a good impression of him as well. I've enjoyed Morrowind and Oblivion.

I'm not fan of Curt Schilling, the baseball player, might like him better as a gamer
