My game

So last night we had our first PC death of the new campaign. The cleric had stayed behind in the tavern while the rest of the group went ahead to the dungeon to scout the area thinking he would catch up the next day. On his way to the dungeon he was ambushed and eaten by a troll.
He rerolled a thief.

I think he needs to roll up a character with better judgment and a higher run speed.

Do you have any plans for the Troll? Perhaps a reoccurring monster villain?
You could start leaving troll related clues, a demolished farmstead, a wrecked caravan, a smelly troll hole under a well traveled bridge. Gnawed on sheep bones.
Then pull a BioWare and make him a companion character.

So the set up was thus.
last game the player of the cleric had to miss so being that his character had gotten disgustingly drunk on on the strong local ale he stated that his character would stay back at the inn recovering for the next game session.
NP
During the next game session the rest of the party left that afternoon and traveled to the dungeons of the wizard lord Thealonus managing to detect and defeat a band of goblins that had been waiting in ambush. They found a presumably safe place to camp for the night and stow some of their non essential gear near the ruined shell of the wizards tower and descended into the depths of the dungeon on the following morning. Rooms are explored and death narrowly averted a couple of times before we called the session over.
Last nights game session began with the wounded but undaunted party standing over the congealing remains of a gelatenous cube they had defeated in the previous game session and plotting their next action. The wizard is down to one spell (hold portal) and the cleric has only one cure light wounds available. rather than head back to town they decide to go for broke and continue searching for the sic keys that will open the inner sanctum of the wizards dungeon. The cleric back at town gets impatient and decides to make the three hour trek across monster infested wilderness to reunite with his party. At this point I ask him if he is sure that doing so is a wise course of action and he says "sure is".
I think these guys have been spoiled by years of 3.5 and 4e combined with me coddling them. Those days are in the past so I decided to leave it all up to the random wilderness encounter charts.
I decide that there is a 1 in 6 chance of a random encounter per hour of travel and ask the player to roll the d6. On his second hour of travel he has an encounter and being a fair minded guy I let the player roll a d20 to determine what he encountered. He rolled a 16. consulting my chart I saw that a 16 is a troll. next I rolled for encounter distance and we both rolled for surprise. The troll surprised the poor lone cleric. At this point i had not told him anything other than which dice to roll so when I rolled the trolls claw attacks which hit and reduced the poor cleric to 1 hp I told him that he sees a flash of fetid green muscle leap from behind a fallen tree and slash into him driving him to the ground, the last thing he sees is the trolls mouth closing around his head and then all goes dark. I had him a new character sheet and advise him to roll another character. He says to me "wait, you mean i got ate by a troll? I am only level one man!" to which I respond "what, did you think you were in a level one zone or something?"
While the player was rolling his new character, a thief the rest of the group decided to travel back to town and manage to have no encounters other than the shreds of their fallen comrades cloak and one torn and bloody boot. They went immediately to the town guard and reported that there was what they think a troll in the area. (the elf in the group has forester as a secondary skill so I allowed a roll to see if he could identify the trolls tracks, he did) The party is now much more wary about traveling through the forest of sharp fangs and even mentioned looking to hire a few hirelings. The new thief managed to strike up a conversation with the elf thief and hit it off (married couple IRL)so he has decided to join the party.
Was a good time.
looking forward to the next session in a couple of weeks.

Good stuff. I love stories like that. My group, most of whom had never played anything but 3.5, had a hard time adapting to the harsher climate of C&C. That is not to say I did not kill them off wholesale in 3.5, it is just in C&C there are less rule to hide behind to avoid death.

Agreed, one of the things I notice when playing the old school rules is that with less numbers on the character sheet the players spend more time filling the gaps with actual character background story.

I remember we were playing through Ghost Tower of Inverness using 3.5. One of the players was playing a warlock (stupidest class ever) and tried to hurl an eldritch blast at the big underwater fish on the water level.
I said it missed because of the depth.
He argued, dug up rules about water, and was like, "So I hit, then?"
I tore the page out of the book, shoved it in my mouth, chewed it into a ball, and then spat it back at him.
You can probably imagine how the Rules Compendium wound up when it came out and was brought to my game.

Spitwads. Nary a finer use I could imagine for a WotC product. Good show, man!

Unfortunately, I know what would happen in my game if I did something like that... so, I wait for them to kill themselves. It would be more fun to be a little more freeballing, though. Sounds like you have a lot of fun.

Was it your book or his?

His book.
My brother had a few big red stamps labeled 'BANNED' made for use with his 3rd ed game. When a player shows him something he thinks stupid, like the Monkey Grip feat, he quickly slaps a stamp on it.
"They knew he had the stamp," is his defense.

Seems a bit juvenile. Someone did that to one of my books they'd be buying me a new one. I don't care what lame justification used...it's disrespectful and vandalism - plainly put.

I will say that if somebody ripped a page out of one of my books, I'd be plenty pissed about it. What I said before still holds, though. A perfect use for most WotC books is spitwads.

You'd have to meet this guy, you would agree with my tactics.

It's still tough justifying shredding somebody else's book. Even if it is a WotC book.

It was hard for anyone to not disrespect this guy. How he ended up leaving my group was when he told me wife he loved her and that once I went insane (tarot cards told him I would) he would be there to take over as husband to her and father of my children.
To be fair, he did also shoplift the book from Barnes & Noble.
Believe it or not, I have had even creepier things happen with my players than that.

I put a bullet into an ipod once, but I've never torn a page from an RPG book. THAT WOULD HURT ME TOO MUCH...

So you're defacing stolen merchandise. That's even better. BD, was it an accident, or did it stop the bullet that was intended for somebody else?

Dude... the HD inside it died and I decided to see how resilient it was. True Story: neither a .45 or a 9mm FMJ will fully penetrate the metal backplate on a 3rd gen ipod at 30 feet.

Sounds like he may have escaped the set of Psycho.

I could think of a few other places that exist in real life.

Didn't the Mythbusters do this too, or at least try to? Sounds like the old belt buckle from the Civil War (I think it's at the Gettysburg museum) that has the bullet embedded in it. Who needs kevlar? I'll take Apple!

Do you look for players at the local nut house?
