Based on the raves, I've decided to pick this up.

This is sort of a dumb question, but which book is this, really. Which is the "1st ed DMG" that I want? The one with the masterful buttery Gygaxian prose?

I saw a "revised 1979 version with different cover" (no pic)

It's the one w/ the red devil / pitfiend thing on the cover, right?

This one?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!

Yes that one.
FYI, the other DMG, with the different cover, has the exact same innards, just a different cover.

Yes like the other said.

I think the red devil is supposed to be an efreet, perhaps with a preference for blondes

Call me a heretic but I like the second cover better. *shrug*

Good score, man. The 1e DMG is a must for any gamer.

On some boards, even asking this question could result in a ban.

Good job on finding the more attractive book, though, I do think the iconography of the 2nd version is neat (the open door image is slick, even if the specific artistry is not my favorite.)

I was pretty sure that later printings had some errata included in them....

...after a little digging, I am correct (woo hoo!). From the 6th printing on, the errata is included. So yeah, not a ton of difference, but there is a little.
Source. I've always suggested to go for a later one, just to be sure you get an errataed version. And I'm with Julian - I like the "gatekeeper" art better anyway.
