Yeah, it was sad news. Carl Macek inspired me so many times into realms of sci-fi action. To this day his efforts still make me daydream of some of the most fantastic tales ever.
May Carl's spacefold calculations be precise!

Oh, man. What a downer. He was only a year older than my mom.
Robotech was a big influence on me as a kid and still is today. It can be seen in my gaming tinkering and designs.
He may not have created Macross, Southern Cross or Mospeada but he made it possible for me as a kid who lived out in the sticks of southwestern Pennsylvania to see Robotech.

I only found out today. As a member of Robotech.com, but not a frequent visitor, I'm glad I got sent the email by them five minutes before I made the post.

Yeah, I went into the Navy before Robotech even released in the US, so I was ignorant of it for several years before discovering it. I have never been a big fan of it, I far prefer Evangelion and Gundams.
It sucks to die, let alone unexpectedly, but he leaves behind a legacy many will remember, not a whole lot of people do that with their lives.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I rushed home to watch Robotech when I was a kid and got up super-early in the morn to watch it in the AM too. Facinated by the show. What Carl Macek did to combine 3 different shows together into a truely epic masterpiece was nothing short of amazing.
When the show went off the air around me, I remember a kid in school about 8th grade saying he was reading the books. I flew out to the mall to Walden Books to see if I could find them... lo and behod, there they were. When I started reading them I couldn't stop. The books were so much better than the show because not only did they follow the show exactly, the books filled in all of the missing pieces and really got into depth of the characters and world. God I still love the Robotech Books (all 23 of them )
When I got into High School we started playing the Robotech RPG. Through 9-12th grade we played all the time, even more than D&D. At one point in those formative years they guys and would play and I would GM probably 3-4 weekdays of every single week. That was amazing.
Go Carl Macek... and thank you for bringing the Akira film to this country in the formative days of direct sales anime in the US. Those years were amazing too.

Robotech was awesome. Have the macross saga in my collection even now. Also was one to rush home so that I wouldn't miss an episode...

I found out on Monday when I got an email alert from my buddy Tom Bateman (who used to work for Harmony Gold). I'm supposing it was congenital since Tom said Carl was a careful eater and didn't smoke. Shake off the dust of the road, Carl, your boots have space dust on them now.
