I ran a game of C&C for a mixed group of 2e and 4e D&D players at SnowCon this weekend and it was a big success! I went with the same approach I took with my players, I explained the basics of the Siege mechanic (10 minutes max) and then we just ran with it. They picked it up very quickly and all said they enjoyed the game and liked the fast pace. One of the fellows even came back as I was packing up to thank me again and to let me know it was the best gaming session of the con for him.
The module I used was
The Crypt of Istaris from Dungeon magazine. I ran it with very few changes (one beastie gets more spells in C&C) and since it was designed as a tournament module, it was a good fit for a convention game.
